Extended Unemployment Benefits Now
being Paid
NFBPA To Hold Third Annual
Scholarship Banquet

Commissioner Michael
Thurmond announced that
federal extended unemploy
ment insurance benefits are
now being paid to 90,994
jobless Georgians.
The benefits were
enacted by Congress and
signed by the President last
Thursday, July 22. The law
extends the qualifying time
for eligible recipients from
June 2 through Nov. 30.
The Georgia
Department of Labor
(GDOL) transmitted bene
fit payments made through
direct deposit and checks
have been mailed. The total
amount of payments made
is $76,187,412.20.
“These resources will
help qualified Georgia job
seekers pay their bills and
support their families while
they continue searching for
employment during these
difficult economic times,”
said Thurmond.
Notifications have
been sent to eligible
claimants. There is no need
for claimants to call or visit
their local GDOL career
centers, unless they are
asked to by GDOL staff.

Public Administrators will
hold its 3rd Annual
Scholarship Banquet on
Thursday, August 19, 2010 at
6 p.m. at the Savannah Civic
Center. State Representative
A1 Williams of House
District 165 will be the
keynote speaker.
During the banquet, the
Savannah Metropolitan
Chapter will award up to five
$1,000 scholarships to
deserving college students
studying public administra
tion or a related field.
The organization will
also present its annual Marks
of Excellence awards to indi
viduals in the community
who have made a positive
impact in the fields of public
service, non-profit, health
care, or private industry.
In 2003, Rep. Williams
was elected to the legislature
and is the first African
American from Liberty
County to be elected state
representative since
Reconstruction and the sec
ond to hold a legislative seat
from the tri-county area of
Glynn, Liberty, and
McIntosh since that time.
Rep. Williams is the
former chairman of the
Georgia Legislative Black
Caucus, which is the largest
state black legislative caucus
in the nation. Some of his
committee appointments
include Economic
Development and Tourism,
State Institutions and
Property, and Game, Fish
and Parks. Officials.
Currently, he serves on the
Liberty County
Development Authority and
the Dorchester Improvement
Association.
