The Savannah State
University Tiger Eye News
and the Tiger's Roar staff
took an amazing trip to
Washington, D.C. to cover
the Congressional Black
Caucus's 40th Annual
Legislative Conference as
reporters and a press team.
The main objective
of both groups from SSU's
department of mass com
munications were to cover
the conference as press
through a student's point of
view. The trip consisted of
6 enthusiastic students,
SSU alumnus Kolya
Barnes, seniors, Brittney
Anderson and Eugene
Brannon and juniors,
Danehsia Ferguson, Ava
Pittman and Whitney
Hunter. The 6 stu
dents along with advisor
Ms. Sonya Howard drove 7
long hours from Savannah
to Washington on
Wednesday, September 15,
2010 and they stayed there
until the following Sunday.
Kolya Barnes
expressed that the main
highlight of his trip was the
networking opportunities
he had with political fig
ures of Capital Hill and his
overall experience of what
it is like to have a future
career in press. Student,
Danehsia Ferguson stated,
“The purpose of the trip
was to report the
Congressional Black
Caucus through the eyes of
a student; we were the only
college there with official
press passes!”
Savannah State
University was the one and
only collegiate representa
tive at the conference cov
ering the event as actual
members of the press. The
Black Caucus panel consist
ed of professional and polit
ical leaders and upcoming
and aspiring African
Americans.
The students expressed how
teamwork is very important
when working in the press
business. Many times on
their trip one student would
be interviewing an individ
ual while another student
was out snapping photo
graphs or setting up the
next interview.
“I gained knowledge
on working with the news
and learning ways to pull
interviews!” said Barnes. “I
definitely got a true experi
ence of what it would be
like working as a member
of the press.”
The students played
various roles from all
