Members of the USO opened around 1943
In 1942, the West Broad
Street YMCA-USO was
founded by a group of dedi
cated citizens of both races.
These persons wanted to
provide for black servicemen
who were active in World
War II. The names of these
dedicated persons are: Bishop
W. S. Barnwell, Rev. C. A.
Lynn, Rev. Talliaferro. Dr. J.
E. Fonvielle. Atty. F. M.
Oliver, Dr. Leroy G.
Cleverdon. Dr. Ralph Mark
Gilbert, Capt. Frank W.
Spencer, Messrs. Martin G.
Haynes, Sheppard, Dunham,
Leroy Carter, Sol C. Johnson.
D. J. Hill, John S. Delaware,
Marion O. Johnston, John Q.
Jefferson, Sam Adler, Charles
McLean, Frank Callen, R. W.
Gadsden. Jack F. Rabey,
Walter S. Scott and John
Less.
The above named group
of citizens raised the money
and bought the building locat
ed at 714 West Broad Street
and turned it over to use for
work among serviceman and
women.
During the course of the
war, USO renovated and
improved the building by
adding supporting columns
that would make the building
safe for dances and general
use by the armed services.
After the war, the
Citizens Committee for
Negro Social Services

Memorial Scholarship
On behalf of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Observance
Day Association, Incorporated, we are pleased to announce
our 2011 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Scholarship
Awards Program.
Please note the minimum requirements for eligibility: GPA
of 80, and SAT 800 or ACT 18. Your Signature is required
on the application form, supporting documentation, which
is found on the back of the application and certify academic
eligibility.
Please make sure that ALL eligible seniors are notified of
this opportunity and emphasize all the required guidelines.

Williams, Chairperson of the Memorial Scholarship Awards

NOTE: the mailing address for application, the required sup
porting documentation and essay, listed on the application.
Deadline for submission is Wednesday, March 18, 2011.

of West Duffy Street).

from USO and immediately
set up a YMCA. James
Ellerby, a former USO-
YMCA director, was
employed as the first secre
tary of the West Broad Street
YMCA. Mr. Ellerby headed
up the work for a period of
three years and resigned to do
settlement house work in
Chicago.
May 1, 1951, Joseph F.
Jenkins, a former USO-
YMCA Director was
employed to push the work of
the YMCA in this communi
ty. On March 15, 1975, Eddie
P. Foster was named
Executive Director. Rev. L. S.
Stell. Jr. served as President
of the Board of Directors.
Under their leadership, the
West Broad Street YMCA
had a meaningful and worth
while rendering of services to
the Savannah and Chatham
County communities.
The branch opened in its
current location in 1968.
Today, Peter Doliber serves
as Executive Director and
continues the great work of
the previous leaders.
The Y continues to
rebuild its facility and its pro
grams as it serves to help peo
ple move out of poverty. It
houses an early learning pro
gram for children 6 weeks to
4 years, a before and after
school program, an alterna
tive for expelled middle
school age children, after
noon tutorials, a public
library, a strong summer pro
gram, as well as a variety of
enrichment and recreation
programs. Coming in April,
the Y will launch an annual
campaign to raise $20,000.

Savannah State
University's Department of
Mass Communications will
host the 60th annual
Southern Regional Press
Institute (SRPI) from Feb.
24-25.
‘‘Celebrating Our
Glorious Past: Achieving the
Unthinkable” is the theme of
the two-day mass media con
ference that will include
workshops on radio/televi
sion production, advertising,
public relations, journalism,
graphic design, skill-build
ing and professional devel
opment for high school and
college students.
Maya Jackson Randall,
the daughter of former SRPI
director Harold Jackson,
Ph.D., will speak at the open
ing session at 9 a.m., Feb. 24,
at the Kennedy Fine Arts
Building. An award-winning
veteran reporter in the Dow
Jones Newswire/Wall Street
Journal bureau in
Washington, Randall covers
Tafia Adams Fox
financial policy, personal
finance and the economy.
She helped cover the 2010
midterm elections and
worked as a White House
correspondent, focusing on
the economic challenges fac
ing Pres. Barack Obama.
Also in 2010, Randall and a
colleague earned the Dow
Jones Newswires Clabby
Award and the Society of
American Business Editors
and Writers Award for break
ing-news coverage of the
government’s financial
bailout plan.
Tatia Adams Fox,
founder and owner of con
sulting firm BOOPA!
Marketing, will speak to
alumni and consultants at 7
p.m., Feb. 24. Fox started her
firm in January 2010 after
leaving her position as vice
president of marketing at
Universal Motown Records,
where she worked with artists
such as Sean “P. Diddy”
Combs, Akon, Swizz Beatz,
Q-Tip, the Wu-Tang Clan,
David Banner, Nick Cannon,
Carl Thomas and Melanie
Fiona. A 1994 graduate of
Savannah State, Fox has also
held leadership positions in
advertising, sales and market
ing at “Heart and Soul
Magazine,” MTV Networks
