Savannah Children’s Choir to Hold
Summer Choral Camp
Campers enjoy harpsichord concert at Afternoon Enrichment
Earth Day Festival Offers Free Urban
Homesteading Workshops and New
Recycling Opportunities
The Savannah
Children’s Choir will hold
their annual Summer Choral
Camp July 18-29, 2011 on
the campus of Calvary Day
School.
Instructors are drawn
from top universities in the
region, and all are earning
either on their master or doc
torate degrees in music edu
cation or related fields.
“We’re thrilled to have
a dynamic group of educa
tors this year. The kids will
be having so much fun, they
may not notice how thor
oughly they’re learning solid
musical skills like theory,
history and music reading,”
comments Emmy Williams,
SCC Director of Education.
In addition to daily
classes, campers have group
choral sessions each day in
preparation for the End of
Camp Concert on Friday,
July 29. Each day also
includes play time, a healthy
snack and Afternoon
Enrichment, a daily concert
by a professional musician or
lecture on a related topic.
“Afternoon Enrichment is
one of the hallmarks of our
camp,” comments Cliffy
Sullivan, Executive Director.
“It helps build good audience
skills in the campers, and
also gives them a chance to
interact with the musicians,”
continues Sullivan.
Summer Choral Camp
is designed for musically-
interested rising 2nd through
8th graders, and is a two-
week, full-day camp. The
SCC also offers Mini-Choral
Camp, a one-week half-day
experience for 4-7 year olds.
Mini-Campers dance, sing
and play while learning key
musical concepts, and also
get to perform in the End of
Camp Concert.
“The camp serves as the
only audition into the
Savannah Children’s Choir
for the 2011/12 season,”
notes Roger Moss, Artistic
Director. “As the Senior
Choir will attend an interna
tional choir festival in com
petition in Verona, Italy in the
spring of 2012, this is a
potential new member’s only
way to join the choir!”
Registration materials
are available online at
www.savannahchoir.org, or
by calling (912) 228-4758.
An early bird discount on
Summer Camp tuition is
available until May 1, and
final registration deadline is
June 15.
The 2011 Savannah
Earth Day Festival will be
held Saturday, April 23 in
Forsyth Park. The 2011 theme
“Save, Recycle, Grow”
emphasizes reducing waste
and increasing sustainability.
The day kicks-off with
RecycleRama from 8 a.m. to
11 a.m. Residents can bring
items ranging from tires to
unused or expired medica
tions to be safely recycled or
disposed of. For the first time
ever, RecycleRama will be
hosting a light bulb exchange.
Residents can bring used
incandescent light bulbs for
safe disposal and receive a
free CFL bulb (quantities lim
ited).
Also new this year, the
City of Savannah is making a
donation to the
Carbonfund.org Foundation
to offset the carbon emissions
produced by the procession of
cars waiting to drop materials
off at RecycleRama.
Over 80 Earth Day
Festival exhibitors will share
earth-friendly information
from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The
Green Bistro will serve food
prepared with local ingredi
ents from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
New this year, the Green
Bistro is using compostable
plates and utensils.
These items and food
scraps from the event will be
collected and composted. The
Forsyth Farmer’s Market will
be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
with fresh produce sold by
local vendors.
Free educational workshops
will be held throughout the
afternoon, demonstrating pop
ular urban homesteading top
ics like beekeeping and back
yard chickens. The day closes
at 4 p.m. with the Fourth
Annual Savannah Wheelie
Earth Day Bike Ride. Earth
Day is a day that is intended to
inspire awareness and appre
ciation for the Earth's natural
environment.
Earth Day was founded by
United States Senator
Gaylord Nelson as an envi
ronmental teach-in first held
on April 22, 1970.
Senator Nelson chose
the date in order to maximize
participation on college cam
puses for what he conceived
as an "environmental teach-
in". He determined the week
of April 19-25 was the best
bet as it did not fall during
exams or spring breaks
