Alumni Association to hold Influential
SSU Alumni Scholarship Benefit

announce the return of the
Influential SSU Alumni
Scholarship Benefit on
Saturday, May 28, 2011.
This year, a Luncheon
Soiree’ is planned to recog
nize the achievements of
Influential SSU Male
Alumni. The event will be
held at Hilton Desoto Hotel,
15 Liberty Street at 12
noon.
The 2011 Influential
Male Alumni honorees are:
Mr. Otis Brock, Dr. Vernon
T. Bryant, Mr. Tony Foy, Lt.
Gen Walter E. Gaskin, Mr.
Larry O. Jackson, Mr. Roy
L. Jackson, Mr. Michael
Kaigler, Mr. James Melvin,
Rep. Mickey Stephens
Lt. Col. David Miller, Mr.
Richard Shinhoster, Ga.
State Rep. Edward

Willie Walker, Rev.
Clarence “Teddy” Williams.
Not only will the chap
ter showcase achieving SSU
male alumni at the benefit,
but we will also showcase
“Upcoming Influential
Young Men” who are 11th
or 12th grade students or
present SSU students who
exhibit characteristics that
could lead to a very suc
cessful future. A $1,000
book scholarship will be
awarded to one of these
young men.
Through the success of
this event, Savannah
Chapter will continue to
provide scholarship oppor-

tunities for deserving SSU
students, support SSU
Athletic and Music
Departments and support
student recruitment at SSU.
The entire commu
nity support - attendance
and finances - to assist the
Savannah Chapter with this
worthy event is encouraged.
Tickets are $40 and may be
purchased from any mem
ber of the Savannah Chapter
or one of the 2011 honorees.
This benefit promises to be
entertaining and enjoyable.

Jones Named Dougherty County
Teacher of the Year
Savannah native
Christopher Jones of
Northside Elementary
School has been named the
2011 Teacher of the Year for
Dougherty County.
“I'm just humbled real
ly to have this honor to even
be in the presence of these
accomplished individuals,”
says Jones.
Jones received the
honor during the Teacher of
the Year Banquet Tuesday
night. With the name Teacher
of the Year 2011, Jones also
received a $1,000 check and
a customized ring for the
school system.
“It's not about me hon
estly speaking. It's just a
reflection of the student body
we have in the Dougherty
County School System,”
says Jones.
Jones, a fourth grade
social studies and science
teacher, is the son of Randy
Christopher Jones
and Sheila Jones, and a 2002 University. Jones and his
graduate of Windsor Forest wife Nicole reside in Albany,
