Remembers the Legendary
Donna Summer
Donna Summer
D onna Summer, affec
tionately coined the
“Queen of Disco,”
died at her Naples, Fla.
home after battling lung can
cer. She was 63.
“Early this morning,
surrounded by family, we
lost Donna Summer Sudano,
a woman of many gifts, the
greatest being her faith,” her
family said in a statement.
Family members say she
suffered from lung cancer, a
fact she kept hidden from the
public. Summer was a five
time Grammy award winner
who was the first artist to
have three consecutive dou
ble albums reach No. 1 on
the U.S. Billboard chart. Fler
hits like “Last Dance,” “Bad
Girls,” and “Love to Love
You Baby” made her a disco
icon.
Born outside of
Boston, Summer was raised
by devout Christian parents
who introduced her to both
gospel and classical music.
In a 2008 interview with
ABC News’ “Nightline,”
Summer remembered her
mom singing songs to her
before going to bed each
night.
“As long as the classical
station was playing on the
radio, I wouldn’t cry,” she
said. “If it was on for 20
hours, I would sleep for 20
hours. I would be calm. So I
think that my mother prob
ably helped my sense of
musicality just by doing
that.”
Summer departed home at
18 to audition for the
Broadway production of
“Hair” and got a role in the
show when it moved to
Germany. There, she met
producer Giorgio Moroder,
who would launch her solo
career. She went on to pro
duce hits like “Bad Girls,”
“Last Dance,” and “She
Works Hard for the
Money,” a song that was

The American Legion Post 500
to Conduct Memorial Services
for all Veterans
By Whitney Hunter
Managing Editor
The American Legion
Post 500 will conduct
memorial services for “all
veterans of the great wars”
on May 28th (Memorial
Day) at 11:00 A.M. at Laurel
Grove South Cemetery. The
cemetery is located off
Ogeechee Road at East 37th
and Kollock Street.
The public is cordially
invited to attend.
Memorial Day, the
back drop for the American
Post 500, is a holiday hon
ored by the federal govern
ment and is celebrated the
last Monday of May.
Memorial Day was officially
proclaimed on May 5, 1868
by General John Logan,
national commander of the
Grand Army of the Republic,
in his General Order No. 11,
and was first observed on 30
May 1868, when flowers
were placed on the graves of
Union and Confederate sol
diers at Arlington National
Cemetery.
The first state to offi
cially recognize the holiday
was New York in 1873. By
1890 it was recognized by all
of the northern states. The
South refused to acknowl
edge the day, honoring their
dead on separate days until
after World War I Originally
declared Decoration Day,
the holiday was invented
after the American Civil War
to remember and honor the
fallen Union soldiers of the
Civil War. By the 20th cen
tury Memorial Day expand
ed as a day to remember all
the men and women who
died while serving in the
United States Armed Forces.
On Monday May 28,
2012 Savannah will holds
the Memorial Day parade to
remember its fallen soldiers.
