Local Teen Holds Fundraiser to Help
Kids Learn to Swim
Emily Johnson, a local
teen who loves to swim is
coordinating The FISHH
2nd Annual Summer Swim
Spree on Saturday, June 9 at
the Chatham County Aquatic
Center from 7 am to 11 am.
This is a project spon
sored by Friends Introducing
Swimming and Healthy
Habits in collaboration with
Georgia Coastal Aquatic
Team and Savannah Swim
Team .The purpose of this
project is to raise funds to
support the swimming pro
grams at the West Broad
YMCA in Savannah,
Georgia and to raise aware
ness of the importance of
swimming for both fitness
and safety.
“There are many young
people in the Savannah com
munity who have limited
access to swimming facili
ties, and it is unfortunate that
so many children in our city
Emily Johnson
never receive the opportuni
ty to learn to swim,” says
Emily Johnson, the event
organizer. “ The West Broad
YMCA, through its summer
swim and camp programs,
hopes to reach many of these
children this summer and to
provide them with the
resources to learn to swim.
We want to help”
Funds raised through
the FISHH Summer Swim
Spree will enable the West
Broad YMCA to provide
these youth with swim
instructors, life guards, swim
equipment, and pool mainte
nance equipment, and thus
be better able to serve these
underserved children.
It is hoped that each swim
mer will raise a minimum of
$300. Swimmers will be
awarded a $10 gift card
(Chick Fil A, Best Buy,

raised. The SST or GCAT
training group with the
most donations raised will be

entitled God’s Been There;
during the weekend of May
25, 2012, at First African
Baptist Church, Savannah,

Thurmond Neil Tillman
serves as pastor. To celebrate
the occasion, Dr. Bobby
Jones of BET’s Bobby Jones
Gospel, will serve as guest
host. Appearing on Friday
night’s program are several
local artists, including Jackie
Bonds, Johnnie Nesbitt,
Alton West, and Minister
Nat Gaiter.
The Wardlaw Brothers
(a.k.a. TWB) are the sons of
Rev. Carl and Mary Wardlaw
Jr. of Lyons, Georgia
(Toombs County). Their first
album, Saddle Up, was
released in May, 2000. With
the release of this new
album, TWB hopes to bridge
the gap between racial rela
tions, promote family ties,
and strongly advocate educa
tion in all communities.
Finally, the brothers strive to

Year-End Totals Show City in
Strong Fiscal Position
On Thursday,
Savannah City Manager
Rochelle Small-Toney pre
sented to City Council a
financial overview, followed
by a more detailed analysis
of 2011 actual budget totals
and year-to-date 2012 eco
nomic indicators presented
by Chief Financial Officer
Dick Evans.
Year-end 2011 figures
show that net revenue from
Savannah’s General Fund -
which represents the bulk of
the City’s operational pro
grams - came in $8.4 mil
lion above expenditures.
This surplus is a direct result
of both the improving econ
omy and implementation of
a strategy developed by the
City Manager and approved
by Council that reeled in
expenses in all areas but
public safety while offering
an early retirement incentive
at the start of last year.
“This strategy helped
us avoid major layoffs, tax
increases and service reduc
tions experienced by munic
ipalities across the country,”
Small-Toney said. “It also
gave us the opportunity to
evaluate our service delivery
strategy, and make changes
that improved operations.
The result is a more efficient
City Government.”
The $8.4 million net
revenue from 2011 will flow
to the City’s General Fund
fund balance, a reserve
established for emergency
purposes. A healthy fund
balance is a sign of a fiscally
strong organization, and is
one of the major factors
credit agencies use to deter
mine bond ratings. The $8.4
million addition to the fund
balance is the largest single
year contribution in
Savannah’s history, bringing
Savannah’s General Fund
fund balance to $31.1 mil
lion, or 19 percent of
General Fund Expenditures,
close to the 20 percent goal
established by City Manager
