Sol C. Johnson Athletic Hall of Fame
Association Formed

It has been over fifty
years since Sol C. Johnson's
first quarterback Frank Ellis,
Jr. approached the line of
scrimmage poised and col
lected, looked over the
defense and took the snap
from starting center, Johnny
Sears. The play, twenty two
quickie, and off tackle hand-
off to George Atkinson who
scampered to the endzone.
On October 22,2011, the Sol
C. Johnson Athletic Hall of
Fame held its first meeting at
the home of Coach Otis
Brock. The Constitution and
By-laws were established
and officers elected. The
officers are: President,
Faheem Shabazz; Vice
President, Frank Ellis, Jr;
Recording Secretary, Robert
and Frank Ellis
B. Sherman; Corresponding
Secretary, Brenda Graham
Hamilton; Acting Treasurer,
Frank Ellis, Jr.; Financial
Secretary, Horace Luten;
Parliamentarian, Abdul
Haqq; Chaplain, Benjamin
Walker; and Sergeant At
Arms, Freeman Mack.
Consistent with the
policies and procedures of
the organization, an Honor's
Court was appointed by the
president. Its function is to
receive all nomination
forms, documentation and
supporting materials submit
ted by nominees for induc
tion into the Hall. The
Honor's court will make
selections for a current class
based on the eligibility crite
ria and the merit of the sup
porting materials. The court
will present the names of the
proposed candidates to the
body for its affirmation.
Individuals appointed to the
court are Coach Otis Brock,
Coach Floyd Morris, Mr.
William Jackson, and Mr.
Clevon Johnson.
In accordance with the
constitution and by-laws of
the organization, member
ship shall consist of alumni,
students, teachers, parents,
and friends, past, present,
and future of the Sol C.
Johnson High School.
Membership is ten dollars
($10) annually. For further

Evan Mobley Graduates
Georgia Southwestern
Evan Thomas Mobley
Evan Thomas Mobley,
son of Avis Knowles and
Felix Mobley jr., graduated
May 5, 2012 from Georgia
Southwestern State
University.
Evan is the first off
spring of Virgie Lee McGee
and Adolphus Mobley Sr to
attend and complete a uni
versity on a full basketball
scholarship.
He is the first out of
their 16 children, 54 grand
children and 92 great grand
children and numerous great
great grandchildren. Evan is
one of the great grandchil
dren.
Evan’s sister Tamara
Knowles graduated from
Mercer University (Macon
GA) cum laude in 2007.
His maternal grandpar
ents are Edmond and
Jeannette Pinckney and
Lawrence and Hazel
Delyons. His paternal grand
parents are Felix Sr. and the
late Stella B. Mobley.

2012 Miss DeRenne Crowned!
Khaleisha McIntyre, a
sixth grade student, was
crowned “Miss DeRenne
2012” at the second annual
“Miss DeRenne Pageant” on
Thursday evening. May 17,
2012, at DeRenne Middle
School. The theme for the
evening was “Magic under
the Night Sky: A World of
Elegance.”
Five young ladies pre
sented their talent and speak
ing skills, and modeled casu
al and formal wear.
However, it was Khaleisha
who wowed the judges and
enthralled the audience with
her energetic original pres
entation of “You See Me.”
Brianna Brown won 1st
Runner Up, and Venus
Wright was named “Miss
Congeniality.” The other
members of Miss DeRenne’s
court are Jameila
Washington and Lori’El
Castle.

Playful City
On May 17, 2012
Savannah was named a
2012 Playful City USA for
its efforts to increase play
opportunities for children
and its outstanding dedica
tion to play.
This is the third
straight year that the nation
al nonprofit KABOOM! has
named Savannah a Playful
City. Savannah maintains 57
playgrounds, 661 acres of
parks, nine public swim
ming pools and 14 commu
nity centers. Savannah also
encourages play to be a part
of neighborhood and busi
ness development plans.

Savannah Arts
Academy provided melodi
ous renditions of songs by
Beyonce’ and Rhianna. Ms.
Sharelle Parrish, a teacher at
DeRenne played the alto
saxophone, accompanied by
pianist and vocalist Ike
Wilson. The young men of
A.S.P.I.R.E. demonstrated
their precision step skills,
and Frankie Smith and
Timothy Austin of
DeRenne’s group
“AVIDUS” also presented an
original, educational rap.
The purpose of the
Miss DeRenne Pageant is to
empower young ladies to:
Interact positively with
peers, improve self-esteem,
learn public speaking,
enhance critical thinking
skills, learn more about
themselves, and focus on
future goals and aspirations.
