Center Runs for Chatham County
Commission District 3
Savannah attorney
Tony Center, son of former
Savannah City Alderman
Leo Center, and Chair of the
Chatham County
Democratic Committee,
qualified to run for Chatham
County Commission District
3.
District 3 is presently
represented by Pat Shay.
Shay decided not to run for
re-election.
“I hope to bring to the
commission the same inten
sity of research, questioning,
and resolution that 1 apply to
my clients’ cases. My goal
is to make County govern
ment more attentive, more
responsive, and more effi
cient. I want Chatham
County citizens to be proud
of their government,” Center
said.
Center, 62, is a native
born Savannahnian. He
attended public schools,
graduated from Savannah
High, and won an academic
scholarship to college. He
Sen. Lester Jackson Launches
Candidacy for Re-Election
State Sen. Lester
Jackson (D-Savannah) offi
cially qualified Wednesday
as a candidate for re-election
to a third term in the Senate,
representing District 2
(Savannah/Chatham
County).
“During my 14 years in
the Georgia General
Assembly, including the past
four years in the Senate and
the previous 10 years in the
House of Representatives, I
have established a proven
record of effective and ethi
cal representation,” Jackson
said. “In today’s
economy, it is more impor
tant than ever for our district
to be represented by an expe
rienced leader in the Senate.
I will continue the fight for
economic development,
affordable healthcare and
quality public education in
our community.”
Sen. Jackson recently
received the “Friend of
Education” award from the
Georgia Association of
Educators following the
2012 legislative session, one

practiced law in Atlanta
where in 1992 he won the
Democratic Primary to
oppose Newt Gingrich for
Congress. Center has been a
trial lawyer since graduating
the University of Georgia
law school in 1975.
He served as General
Counsel to a national
telecommunications compa
ny. Since moving home to
Savannah in 2001, Center
has stayed active in politics.
He twice ran for Congress,
then was elected and now
serves as Chair of the
Chatham County
Democratic Committee,
where he set records in
fundraising, recruiting can
didates, and party atten
dance. “My strengths are
organization, learning the
facts, and understanding the
issues. I intend to campaign
vigorously and engage the
electorate. Should I be elect
ed, I look forward to serving
the citizens of Chatham
County, particularly of the
third district,” Center stated.
Center is still organiz
ing his campaign team.

Senator Lester Jackson
of only two Senators to earn
the honor. He was also rec
ognized by Georgia
Conservation Voters with the
Environmental Leadership
Award. He was also selected
as Legislator of the Year by
the Georgia Legislative
Black Caucus on two occa
sions (2008 and 2010) and as
the GLBC's Freshman
Legislator of the Year in
1999.
He presently serves as
interim treasurer of the
Democratic Party of Georgia
and was appointed by
President Barack Obama to
the Democratic National
Committee in 2009, the only
Georgia legislator now serv
ing on the DNC and the first
Savannah resident to do so in
nearly 20 years. He served as
a delegate to the Democratic
National Conventions in
Boston (2000) and Denver
(2008). The Chatham
County Democratic
Committee recognized Sen.
Jackson’s efforts on behalf of
the party by honoring him
with the prestigious Arthur
Gignilliat Jr. Public Service
Award in 2010.
A family dentist, Sen.
Jackson said he looks for
ward to meeting with the
voters and discussing the
issues facing Savannah and
the state of Georgia in the
weeks and months ahead.
The Democratic Primary is
scheduled for July 31, and
the General Election will be
held Nov. 6.

Malinda J. Hodge Runs for 2nd
District School Board
Hines Announces Re-Election for
Chatham School Board District 5
On Friday, May 25,
2012, Mrs. Malinda Hodge
announced her candidacy
and qualified for the 2nd
District School Board Seat.
Mrs. Hodge is a life
long resident of Savannah-
Chatham County. She is a
graduate of the Savannah-
Chatham County Public
School System and she
attended Savannah State
University. She is an advo
cate for education. Mrs.
Hodge is currently a member
of the National Parent
Teacher Association where
she served as a local PTA
President and member of the
PTA Council for Savannah
Chatham County Public
Schools. She is presently
serving on the Board of
Directors of the Chatham-
Savannah Youth Futures
Authority.
Her passion for chil
dren and youth is evident in
her community involvement,
her neighborhood participa
tion, and in her home.
She has already gained
the support of local elected
officials, clergy, neighbor
hood association leaders and
educators.

Mrs. Irene Gadson-
Hines, incumbent for
Savannah-Chatham County
Public School
Board District Five, is
announcing candidacy for
re-election. She is presently
completing six years as
School Board Representative
of District Five.
She is a retired educa
tor after thirty-one years of
teaching. Twenty-five of
those years were spent at
Windsor Forest High School
as a biology instructor. She is
proud to serve the con
stituents of the Five District.
She has worked tirelessly in
the decision making process
to ensure that all students are
served properly in the
Savannah -Chatham County
Public School System.
Irene Gadson-Hines
Mrs. Hines realizes that
there is much work remain
ing and insists that principals
and teachers who are hired
will continue to strive
improving reading scores,
end of course test perform
ance, graduation rates, truan
cy, discipline and safety for
all students attending
Savannah-Chatham County
Public Schools.
She works with other
board members to form poli
cies and to ensure that funds
are made available for the
implementation and
improvement of programs
offered to students in kinder
garten through twelfth grade.
Mrs. Hines has a strong pas
sion for all students and
desires that each one of them
have a successful school
experience as they prepare
for post secondary education
or the work force.

Savannah Celebrates Its Fashion’s
Night Out
From Manhattan to
Milan, Atlanta to Australia,
patrons worldwide will
emerge on Thursday evening,
September 6, 2012 from 6pm
to 11pm for the fourth annual
after-hours shopping extrava
ganza Fashion’s Night Out.
After a hugely successful
pedestrian traffic-only event
in downtown Savannah for
more than 4000 people, the
City of Savannah has earned
its place alongside fashion
centers like New York, Los
Angeles and Chicago in cele
brating this global event.
A collaboration between
American Vogue, the Council
of Fashion Designers of
America, NYC & Co., and
the City of New York, this
initiative was launched in
2009 to spark consumer con
fidence during the economic
downturn. Fashion’s Night
Out (FNO) is an evening for
shoppers to mix, mingle, and
participate in premiere events
that will include celebrity
guests, musical performanc
es, art installations and more.
In partnership with the
City of Savannah through its
Department of Economic
Development, all fashion and
design boutiques in the city
are invited to join in and
become a part of this unique
and extraordinary event. The
deadline to register is June
11, 2012. Participating busi
nesses will host workshops,
featured artists, featured
designers, live music, cater
ing, complimentary
makeovers, tastings and con
sultations during the event.
This event is a city wide cel
ebration for all businesses in
Savannah,” says MarRonde

ed-hours shopping night in
