Savannah Ocean Exchange Announces Winners
The Savannah
Ocean Exchange) Global Re
view Panel has selected the
winners of the 2012 Solu
tions Exchange awards. Each
award includes a $100,000
prize from Worldwide Spon
sors Gulfstream Aerospace
Corp. and Wallenius Wil-
helmsen Logistics (WWL).
This year’s
$100,000 Gulfstream Navi
gator Award was given to
Protei: Ocean Cleaning Sail
ing Robots presented by
Gabriella Levine. Protei is a
seafaring surface vessel, con
structed to carry research in
struments and environmental
clean-up equipment autono
mously over long distances
on the ocean via wind power.
The project was conceived
in response to inefficiencies
in oil spill relief efforts, and
frustration with the unsus
tainable research and design
costs of current robotic oce
anic drones. Protei’s mission
is to provide a locally acces
sible, economically efficient
platform for the development
of ocean-cleaning data col
lecting robotic drones. Their
goal is to harness human in
novation, technological in
genuity, and creative design
to preserve the integrity of
natural resources.
This solution best
reflects the goals of The Gulf
stream Navigator Award: ap
plicability across multiple in
dustries to generate a positive
impact on the economy and
the environment. “We con
gratulate Protei, winner of
this year’s award,” said Joe
Lombardo, executive vice
president, Aerospace Group,
General Dynamics, par
ent company of Gulfstream
Aerospace. “They demon
strated what can be done
when diverse groups work
together. Everyone who pre
sented a solution this week
deserves to be recognized for
embracing the spirit of col
laboration and cooperation
and for their commitment to
make a positive difference in
the world.”
Advancing a ship
ping and logistics solution
for increased sustainabil
ity through zero-emissions,
transport on land and at sea,
the WWL Orcelle® Grant of
2012 and $100,000 has been
awarded to Nonox: Emulsion
Combustion Systems pre
sented by Wes Pence.
The Nonox emul
sion combustion unit is a
complete emulsion fuel
system containing the mix
ing chamber and fuel/water
proportioning controls. The
ECU can be switched back
and forth between emulsion
and straight fuel at the flick
of a switch.
