The HBO Documentary

Screening Continues In The Hostess City
Panel Members: Rene Taren, Larry Rivers, Peter Brod-
head, Paula Kreissler, Dr. Dave Davies, Carol Kirchner,
Cristina Gibson, and Robert Skiljan.

Last week at the
Hoskins Center on the Cam
pus of Memorial Health Uni
versity Medical Center, in the
Mercer Auditorium, we con
tinued the conversation on
obesity after the screening of
the HBO Special Documen
tary, “The weight of the na
tion’’, with the panel discus
sion.
This film, “Conse
quences,” examined the scope
of the obesity epidemic and
explores the serious health
consequences of being over
weight.
The attendees had an
up close and personal view of
how being overweight stress
es the bodies organs, and how
that stress leads to even more
complicated chronic lifestyle
diseases such as heart dis
ease, stroke, diabetes, kidney
involvement, many cancers
and early death.
The panel leader, Pe
ter Brodhead, certified nutri
tionist and owner of Brighter
Day Natural Foods Market,
told us that changing our food
choices is the key to weight
loss and health management,
and therefore a better life.
By making the choice for
fresh, locally grown foods,
opting out of sugared bever
ages and processed foods, our
weight would easily normal
ize, and that adding exercise
to the equation would end the
battle with weight, for good.
Katrina Jones was not sur
prised to learn that 66 per
cent of Americans are now
overweight or obese. “It’s a
struggle to find time to work
out, even though we all know
it helps in keeping the weight
down. “Things have changed
so much, we’re just not as ac
tive as we once were,” Jones
said.
For our third venue
the film “Choices,” will be
screened on Saturday, Oct.
27 at 4PM at the beauti
ful Circa 1867 historic Afri
can American Museum, the
Beach Institute, located at
502 E. Harris Street in Sa
vannah. “Choices” will re
veal even more insights on
losing weight, maintaining
weight loss and preventing
weight gain. Join us, and join
the discussion.
The last film in the
series “Challenges,” will be
screened on November 15th
at Live Oak’s Southwest Li
brary on Savannah’s South-
side, at 5:30 PM. And as with
all the screenings, we’ll have
a panel of local experts to an
swer your questions.
This film will ex
amine the major forces be
hind the obesity epidemic,
including agriculture, eco
nomics, evolutionary biol
ogy, food marketing, racial
and the socioeconomic dis
parities, physical inactivity,
American food culture and
the strong influence of the
food and beverage industry.
‘It’s very clear that
the issue of obesity is not
going to get solved in the
doctor’s office or in the hos
pital,” Baxter continued.

Fire Prevention Week
Increases Awareness
This year’s Fire
Prevention Week theme is
“Have 2 Ways Out” and Sa
vannah firefighters encour
age all citizens to prepare and
practice evacuation plans at
home and work.. The week-
long fire safety observance
will run from Sunday, now
through Saturday, October
13th but Savannah Fire and
Emergency Services will
focus extra emphasis on fire
prevention during the entire
month of October.
Fire Prevention
Week is sponsored by the
National Fire Protection As
sociation and commemorates
the Great Chicago Fire of
1871. That tragic fire killed
more than 250 people and
destroyed more than 17,400
structures, with much of the
destruction occurring on Oct.
9. These events changed the
way firefighters and public
officials thought about fire
safety. Fire Prevention Week
is the longest running public
health and safety observance
on record. A presidential
proclamation has been signed
for the observance every year
since 1925.
SFES has expanded
its fire prevention observance
to extend throughout the en
tire month. During October,
Savannah firefighters will
present fire safety and pre
vention programs through
out the city with special
emphasis on programs for
the youth. In addition to fire
prevention offerings in many
public schools, Savannah
firefighters will also make
special visits to day care and
pre-school facilities through
out the city, teaching the ba
sics of fire safety and offer
ing children the opportunity
to interact with firefighters
and tour their trucks.
Organizations that
wish to schedule public fire
safety education programs
during the month of October
are encouraged to contact the
SFES Public Information Of
fice at 644-5957.
