Savannah Sunrise Rotary Club Inducts
New Officers

Savannah Sunrise Rotary
Club, including Mick Mc
Cay as president. The Rotary
year is from July 1-June 30
and, the induction ceremo
ny is conducted at this time
in more than 34,000 Rotary
clubs around the world.
The incoming offi
cers are: Mick McCay, Pres
ident; Maureen Horvath,
Secretary/Treasurer; Rafe
Semmes, President-elect;
Flyod Whittington, Sergeant
at Arms, and Past President
Doug Foran.
Savannah Sunrise,
part of Rotary International,
is one of 12 clubs in the Sa
vannah area. Much of their
support is focused on local
charitable organizations, such
as Midtown Community Cen
ter, West Broad Street YMCA
and SAFE Shelter, as well
as a literacy initiative. Rev
enues from the club’s annual
Trick or Trot Road Race, held
the last Saturday of October,
funds several of their charita
ble projects.
Public Invited to
Drainage Project Meeting
The City of Savannah will
hold a public drop-in session
next week to explain plans for
a project designed to provide
flooding relief to the Baldwin
Park neighborhood.
The drop-in session will be
held Thursday. July 25, at the
Savannah Arts Academy, 500
Washington Avenue, from
5-6:30 p.m. The public is in
vited to stop by to view the
planned improvements, learn
about the project schedule,
and speak with project staff.

Celebrating the Journey

the state of Georgia and the
nation in celebrating the jour
ney of Rev. Carl W. Scott Gil-
liard on July 31, 2013 at the
Family Life Center, located at
6 p.m. Dinner will be served,
gifts are welcome, local, na
tional, state leaders, radio and
television personalities will
be on hand. Gilliard will also
be celebrating his birthday.
Over 30 years ago a
young man sacrificed a col
lege scholarship and came
back home to Savannah to
attack the ever plaguing el
ements of violence. The rea
son stemmed from the lost of
two friends that were killed to
senseless violence. In High
School, he was one of the best

It was with the help of his
mother Gertrude Gilliard and
his Band director Mr. Law
rence Hutchins Jr. that one
day when he came home his
bags were packed to be a part
of the nationally known Mor
ris Brown Marching Wolver
ines. He met State Rep. Able
Mable Thomas from Atlanta,
Ga. who introduced Carl to
the Rev. Jesse Jackson who
was making his first bid for
President. He then became
his Youth and College Coor
dinator where he helped orga
nized the college vote. While
in Atlanta he also met his
mentor for life the Rev. Dr.
Hosea Williams. He joined
the SCLC in that same year
and was groomed into lead

born. Rev. In '1988 Gilliard
travelled to 28 cities in Ten
nessee, Mississippi, Alabama
and Georgia. He traveled
on the Martin Luther King
Pilgrimage for Economic
Justice. He was appointed to
the national advance team for
SCLC and traveled with the
late: Rev. Ralph Abernathy,
Dick Gregory, Mrs. Corretta
Scott King, former wrestler
Thunderbolt Patterson, for
mer Nation NAACP Presi
dent Ben Hooks, Martin Lu
ther King III and Savannah’s
own Earl Shinholster.
In the early 80’s
Gilliard helped initiate sev
eral programs and first in
cluding Prayer Vigils for
murdered victims, the Com
munity Youth Initiative, food
programs from Communi
ty Centers to the brown bag
give-away at St. Paul CME.
Gilliard has been in radio and
television for over 30 years
with one of the longest and
highest rated shows entitled
“Tell It Like It Is” (WSOK)
and several others programs.
Gilliard is the founder of
the Savannah Drama Club a
Christian based cultural arts
program that has served hun
dreds of youth in Savannah
and has traveled to the nation’
Capital and White House lour
times.
He is the curator and
founder of the positive Rap
group CandyLove and the
organization Operation Love
Inc.Gilliard was appointed by
the national office of SCLC
in 2009 to develop the Geor
gia Coastal SCLC which is
responsible for over 15 coun
ties in Georgia were serves
as President. In 2009 he also
formed Savannah Feed the
Hungry which now Feed the
Hungry Inc. and represents:
Savannah and is the current
Pastor the Family Life Center.
