SPORTS WITH WALTER MOORE
Tigers Face Tough
Schedule
Earnest Wilson
III could not have drawn a
tougher schedule in his first
year as the Savannah State
head football coach. The Ti
gers open the 2013 season at
Georgia Southern followed
by a road game at Troy. SSU
hosts Fort Valley State in
their third game but travel
to Miami-Florida the week
after. If there is any com
pensation, Savannah State
stands to make $635,000
for their troubles. GSU will
pay $85,000 while Troy will
write the Tigers a check for
$175,000. The biggest pay
day of the season comes
from Miami where SSU will
collect $375,000. FVSU will
receive a $30,000 guarantee
from Savannah State. After
the Miami game, SSU will
finish the schedule with eight
straight MEAC contests.
Tech WR
Transfers To SSU
Former Georgia
Tech wide receiver Jeremy
Moore has transferred to Sa
vannah State. The 6-3,180 se
nior joins a talented group of
pass catchers at SSU should
fit into the Tigers pass-happy
Walter Moore
offense. The Austin, Texas
native started six of the 11
games he played in last sea
son where he caught 10 pass
es for 194 yards. He played in
three games in 2011 and sat
out the 2010 season to recov
er from knee surgery. Moore
was redshirted in 2009.

Savannah State foot
ball coach Earnest Wilson
III has named his team cap
tains for the season opener at
Georgia Southern on August
31. Seniors John Wilson, Mi-
cah Blount and Jake Durham
along with sophomore Devin
Stainrod have been selected.
Wilson is a defensive back,

and Stainrod is a offensive
lineman.
NCCU Fires
Football Coach
North Carolina
Central has fired head foot
ball coach Henry Frazier III.
Frazier was arrested for the
second time on August 19.
Frazier was arrested for vi
olating a domestic violence
protection order between him
and his ex-wife, Lanier Tum-
er-Frazier. Media reports say
the protection order stems
from the incident that led to
Frazier’s first arrest in May
of 2012 for assault on a fe
male. On Aug. 20, Frazier
was suspended. He was fired
a day later. Central finished
the 2012 season with a 6-5
record and the Eagles were
picked to finish fourth in the
MEAC this season. Dewayne
Foster has been appointed the
interim head coach. NCCU
opens the season on August
31 against Duke.

Hubert Ginn Among The 1972 Miami

The White House

Savannah native
Hubert Ginn was a member
of the 1972 Miami Dolphins
who traveled to the White
House last week to be hon
ored by President Barak
Obama.
President Obama
delivered remarks during a
ceremony honoring the 1972
Super Bowl Champion
Miami Dolphins in
the East Room of the
White House on last
Tuesday, August 20,
2013.
When the
Miami Dolphins took
to the field at the Los
Angeles Coliseum on
January 14, 1973, his
tory was on the line.
After winning every
game so far in the sea
son, that Super Bowl
Sunday, the Dolphins
swept past the Wash
ington Redskins in
Super Bowl VII with a
14-7 victory to clinch
the championship.
With two touchdowns
and extra point con
versions, the Dolphins
became the first team in the
NFL to have a perfect season.
Now, 40 years after the Dol
phins first donned their Super
Bowl rings, they remain the
only undefeated team in NFL
history.
President Obama
welcomed the 1973 Super
Bowl Champion Miami Dol
phins to the White House to
celebrate their accomplish
ment. It did not become com
mon practice for Super Bowl
champions to visit the White
House until after 1980, and
President Obama was able to
Hubert Ginn
take advantage of past presi
dents’ missed opportunity.
“I know that some
people may be asking why
we’re doing this after all
these years. And my answer
is simple: I wanted to be the
young guy up here for once,”
President Obama joked.
But beyond simply
feeling young amidst NFL
veterans, President Obama
emphasized the significance
of the 1973 Super Bowl
Champions on both sports
history and their communi
ties.
Ginn played football
at Tompkins High School
in Savannah and at Flori
da A&M and for eight full
seasons as a running back
in the NFL including the
I 1972 Miami Dolphins, the
only undefeated, untied
team in league history.
Ginn has won 2
Super Bowl Rings. The
gold ring commemorates
the championship played
in January 1973, and the
other, in silver and black,
is for the 1976 Oakland
Raiders’ title in Super
Bowl XI.
“I’ve won lots of
championship games with
other teams I’ve played
with in college and high
school, but there’s nothing
like that feeling we had when
we went 17-0,” Ginn said.
“We were just perfect. We
were competing against our
selves.”
