Merilus Simms (1823-1912),
an African American, rep
resented Chatham County
in the Georgia Legislature
during Reconstruction.
During his life he made
significant contribution to
the social, moral and politi
cal thought and policy of the
community; Reverend Thur
mond Neil Tillman has im
pacted the Savannah commu
nity similarly since 1982. The
Beach Institute Education
Award is given to individuals
who have made outstanding
contributions in the field of
Education in the Coastal Em
pire—Dr. Paul M. Pressly’s
outstanding education contri
bution to the Coastal Empire
began in 1981 at Savannah
Country Day School and con
tinues today at the Ossabaw
Island Education Alliance.
The recipient of Robert Seng-
stacke Abbott Youth Award
is enrolled in high school or
college and in good academic
standing, has a record of civic
engagement, possesses exem
plary leadership skills, and
is involved in co-curricular
activities. Alexis L. Parker,
a St. Vincent Academy grad
uate and Spelman College
attendee, was active in sports
and community service and
achieved academic success
throughout her k-12 educa
tion experience.

Chairperson of the KTCF
Board of Directors, says,
“The Honorees of the Awards
Gala are committed to ad
vancing Savannah’s social
and civic institutions in ways
that enhance the lives of all
citizens. The gala presents
an opportunity to recognize
and tell the stories of fellow
Savannahians who have con
tributed to the advancement
of our city”.
The King-Tisdell
Cottage Foundation was
founded in 1981 by civil
rights leader, historian, and
preservationist W.W. Law.

Cummings. The Honorary
Chairmen for the event this
year are: Willie Seymore the
President of International
Longshoreman’s Associa
tion (ILA) Local 1414 and
Mark A. Tate, the principal
and founding attorney with
the Tate Law Group. Dawn
Baker, with WTOC News,
will serve as the MC for the
dinner program. State Senator
Dr. Lester Jackson will host
the VIP reception.
