nounced the sponsors, line

Park program to be held on
Sunday, October 4, 2015, in
Forsyth Park.
For the third year
in a row, Parker’s will serve
as the presenting sponsor of
this popular fall community
event. As part of its sponsor
ship, Parker’s selected the
theme around which pic

year’s theme — “Flollywood
in the Park” — is based on
the Philharmonic’s perfor

Flur, Oklahoma!, and Flarry
Potter.
“Picnic in the Park
is a beloved Savannah tradi
tion and we’re looking for
ward to a great night filled
with great music,” said Rob

of the Philharmonic.
Picnic in the Park,

Philharmonic and the City

an evening of live music,
family friendly activities
and a creative spread of pic

In addition to Pic

the Integrative Medicine
Program at The Anderson
Cancer Institute at Memo
rial Hospital in Savannah,
providing musicians to play
for patients and staff and
bringing the joy and healing
powers of music to as many
members of the community
as possible. The orchestra
and chorus also have an ef
fective educational program,
bringing students to rehears
als and providing master
classes to talented young
musicians in the area by vis
iting soloists.
“At the Savannah
Philharmonic, we firmly
believe that arts and culture
should be for everyone —
this is our Philharmonic,”
said Rund. “To that end,
Picnic in the Park is just one
part of our robust communi

Michael Brown Jr.’s Memory Honored with
Moments of Silence, March
By Kenya Vaughn, Special to the NNPA from the St. Louis American
Michael Brown Sr. and his family leads a silent march in memory of his son Michael Brown Jr. on the one-
year anniversary of his death. (Lawrence Bryant/St. Louis American)
Special to the
NNPA from the St. Louis
American
“I just want to give love to
my family and my friends
- my new friends and my
world,” Michael Brown Sr.
told the crowd. “Y’all are
my world.”
His remarks were
the briefest of among by
those selected to speak in
honor of his son Michael
Brown Jr.’s life on the first
anniversary of his death.
At 18 years old, Brown was
killed before he could truly
live.
Yet the phenome
non of prolific unrest that his
death incited reignited the
conversation on the broken
relationship between law
enforcement and the black
community - and assured he
will never be forgotten.
As the sun beat down at the
very spot where Michael
Brown Jr. ’s life ended at the
hands of former Ferguson
Police Officer Darren Wil
son, the commemoration
and silent march served as
a reminder that the fight was
not over.
“This year has
been so hard. No account
ability, no justice. And po
lice are still killing us,” said
Erica Garner, daughter of
Eric Gamer.
She was in atten
dance, as were the family
of Oscar Grant - who was
killed by an Oakland tran
sit cop on News Year’s Day
2009.
