Coastal Jazz Association Presents
Sunday Jazz Concert
The Coastal Jazz Associa
tion presents a concert featuring Russ
Nolan performing at the Hotel Indigo
located at 201 W. Bay St. on Sunday,
November 20th. at 5pm.
Coastal Jazz Asociation has
partnered with Kirschner Furs to pres
ent a mini-fashion show highlighting
the latest in fur trim capes, purses,
jackets and more. Donated by JoAnne
and Charlie Ellis, of Kirschner Furs, a
purple Paisley Cashmere/Reversible
Shawl trimmed in Purple Fox with
matching Purple Skin Purse from Italy
designed by Marjorie Renner will be
auctioned during the concert. The total
value is S1025. Come prepared to bid.
Russ Nolan, an Illinois na
tive started out on clarinet at age 10
while attending school in Gurnee, but
sports took precedence and Nolan en
visioned becoming a professional ath
lete. Albums by Weather Report, Herbie
Hancock, and the Brecker Brothers turned his head around,
however, and he eventually entered the esteemed jazz pro
gram at North Texas State (now the University of North
Texas).
Russ Nolan has been docu
menting his explorations of Latin
rhythms and modem jazz harmony
on record since the release of his
2004 debut album, Two Colors.
He has worked with special guests
like percussionist Victor Rendon
and pianists Kenny Werner and
Manuel Valera while deepening
ties with players who eventually
coalesced into his working group.
Nolan gained proficiency
in Latin rhythms in an unusual
way—by not only learning salsa
dancing, but also becoming a styl
ish expert at it. “The Latin danc
ing made me stronger rhythmical
ly,” he says. “Playing good time is
usually the last thing horn players
develop, and dancing has helped
Russ Nolan me S et tlle rhythm in my body
much in the same way a drummer
develops four-way coordination.” He’s been connected
with New York’s burgeoning Pan-American scene, for the
last 3 years leading a salsa band that performs for dancers.

Georgia Federation of Teachers Calls On
Gov. Deal to Respect Voters’Will
The Georgia Fed
eration of Teachers has
called on Gov. Nathan Deal
to immediately meet to dis
cuss a path forward for pub
lic education, after voters
overwhelmingly rejected
his bid to strip local control
from public schools.
On Election Day,
a supennajority of Georgia
voters spoke against the bal
lot initiative—Amendment
1—that would have led to
a state takeover of public
schools.
The GFT, whose
community campaign
against the initiative was
pivotal, is now asking Gov.
Deal to work with educators
Gov. Nathan Deal
to move forward to imple
ment proven strategies to
ensure school success.
GFT President
Verdaillia Turner said: “It is
time to raise the bar. Georgia
voters sent a message that
we can no longer pander to
political agendas when it
comes to schools and kids.
In the past, educators who
were not handpicked by
elected officials were ex
cluded from the process.
Decisions were somehow
made without our input.
This must cease.
“The GFT has
asked the governor’s office
for a face-to-face meeting.
We’ve been put off until
January, while state Super
intendent Richard Woods
has called a ‘next steps’
meeting without us. The
General Assembly will con
vene in January, and there
will be many competing
agendas. The governor can
not afford to wait until then
to begin the conversation
with educators.
“Schools, tax dol
lars and our children are far
too precious to continue to
ignore what works in public
education.
