Celebrating 60 Years Of
Friendship Service
Savannah
(GA) Chapter of The Links,
Incorporated kicked off its
60th Anniversary Celebra
tion with community ser
vice projects and a reception
honoring two local entities
who have worked tirelessly
to support programs uplift
ing children and families.
The Chapter was
one of the local sponsors
of “Souls Strolling to the
Polls,” an effort to encour
age members of churches to
provide transportation and
support for those who stood
in lines to vote on Sunday,
October 30, 2016. Chapter
members prepared and pre
sented 60 personal care - hy
giene bags to Safe Shelter |
Center for Domestic Vio
lence Services - Savannah, a
center that provides tempo
rary emergency shelter and
confidential services to vic
tims of domestic violence.
An additional community
service project included as
a part of the 60th Anniver
sary programming was the
sorting and packing of 244
boxes, over 10,000 pounds
of non-perishable food at
America’s Second Harvest
of Coastal Georgia, Inc.,
Savannah, GA. The box

Institute African American
Cultural Center, on the af
ternoon of November 13,
2016. A video presentation
that shared segments, artic
ulated by members of the
Savannah (GA) Chapter, of
the organization’s presence
in the Savannah community
for 60 years, and the recog
nition of two long standing
community partners, the
Savannah-Chatham Coun
ty Public School System
(SCCPSS) and the City of
Savannah’s Department of
Cultural Affairs, were the
highlights of the afternoon.
Eight of the nine living past
presidents of the Chapter
were in attendance and also
recognized with special
presentations. The Chapter
will celebrate a full year in
recognition of 60 years of
friendship and service.

Dionne Hoskins-Brown as
Co-Chair. Ms. Beverly M.
Hall is Chapter President.

THE PORT OF SAVANNAH
TO HOST CHRISTMAS AT
SEA WRAPPING PARTY
The Maritime
Bethel at the Port of Sa
vannah will continue its
annual tradition of provid
ing Christmas gifts for hun
dreds of seafarers who are
away from home and their
families at Christmas. The
Christmas-at-Sea wrapping
party for volunteers will
be held at 6 p.m. Thursday,
Dec. 15, at the Garden City
United Methodist Church,
62 Vamedoe Ave.
The Maritime
Bethel is looking for volun
teers to help assemble and
wrap these gifts for the sea
farers to help share the joy
of the holidays. Volunteers
will be treated to a catered
meal before the wrapping
gets under way.
The Maritime
Bethel at Savannah provides
‘far away from home’ per
sonal and practical support
to seafarers who come into
the Savannah port from all
over the world. For almost
200 years Maritime Bethels
around the world in major
port cities have prepared a
Christmas gift for the sea
farers who are thousands of
miles from their loved ones
on Christmas Day. The Mar
itime Bethel at the Port of
Savannah has continued this
tradition since it began.
“This Christmas
-at-Sea tradition is some
thing I look forward to ev
ery year. Being able to bring
Christmas joy to the seafar
ers with this program is truly
a gift within itself,” Chap
lain Andy Krey said. “We
are always delighted with
the turnout of volunteers
from the community at this
wrapping party and we are
grateful to have their sup
port to make this program
possible.” “We work with
such nonprofits as the Eco
nomic Opportunity Author
ity as well as the Chatham
County Sheriff’s office and
churches to help as many
families as we can reach,
we are blessed to be work
ing at a busy, growing port
and want to share those
blessings,” said Tommy
Stokes III, Local 1414 Pres
ident at a recent Thanksgiv
ing Gala. “We’ve already
kicked off our annual event
with employees signing up
to provide specific gifts,”
said Emily Goldman, Man
ager of port relations.

Savannah Tech Celebrates
$7.2 Million Raised For
Campaign
The Savannah
Technical College Founda
tion announced it has raised
the most money ever in pri
vate funds to support the
College - $7.27 million - at
its 13 th annual Opportunity
Gala. The event honoring
technology had more than
200 in attendance.
“Thank you to all
who have supported Sa
vannah Technical College
- Where Excellence really
does meet Opportunity,”
said STC President Dr.
Kathy Love. “We thank you
for believing in us with your
financial support. We appre
ciate your continued support
hiring our graduates.”

McCachem announced a to
tal of $500,000 for new ma
jor gifts recently received by
the College.

Haise, Stratton Leopold,
Howard Morrison, Donald
Lovette, Dick Eckburg,
Bob Jepson, Arthur Gignil-
liat and Arnold Tenenbaum.
“We appreciate your leader
ship and insight to making
our campaign a success,”
said Love. “We pledge to
continue to be worthy of
your respect, good will and
financial investment.”
The Campaign,
“Where Excellence Meets
Opportunity” showcased
the College’s excellence in
instruction through oppor
tunities it provides students.
The College offers oppor
tunity based on accessible,
valuable career education
in more than 150 different
programs. Its excellence has
been earned through state
wide and national recogni
tion in many key areas, as
the Technical College Sys
tem of Georgia 2013 Tech
nical College of the Year
and as one of the top four
TCSG colleges in 2014.
STC faculty have also been
recognized beyond state
borders as leaders in their
fields.
“In my opinion,
Savannah Tech is proba
bly the greatest asset this
community has,” said Dick
Eckburg, STC benefactor
and one of the campaign’s
volunteer chairmen. “Peo
ple from all ages, all walks
of life go to Savannah Tech.
Not only do they learn
skills, but they also learn
the dignity of work. Gradu
ates are helping to make our
society a better place.”
The campaign
focused on five key areas:
precision manufacturing,
health sciences, culinary
arts/heritage tourism, tech
nology and student support.
The campaign was
led by the Savannah Tech
nical College Foundation,
a 501(c)3 organization that
raises funds to support Sa
vannah Technical College.
