“Eye Care” For You
‘Remember To Take Care OfYourself*
It is December
already. As you look back
over 2016, you should re
flect not only on what you
did to help take care of oth
ers, but what you did to take
care of yourself.
For many of us,
we get wrapped up into car
ing for others (family and
friends) that we overlook the
need to take care of our own
selves.
Healthcare issues
are the number one cause
of death in America. And
there are about as many men
as women who have health
concerns that could be life
threatening. In addition, the
eyes are affected from many
health problems such as di
abetes, high blood pressure,
arthritis, and many other
conditions. Most times,
many people will neglect
their eye health if they do
not have any problems ‘see
ing’ things. But some of the
most serious eye conditions
(such as glaucoma, diabetic
retinopathy, hypertensive
retinopathy, and tumors) can
affect the eyes without caus
ing any immediate problems
with eyesight.
That’s why I am
urging you to make sure you
include yourself in the list of
people you plan to take care
of before the end of this year
and in the coming New Year.
In fact, it would be best to
put yourself first on the list
to make sure that you will be
healthy enough to continue
taking care of the others you
love.
It has been a plea
sure writing articles to help
increase awareness of eye
conditions and eye health
all this year. Vision is about
more than just having 20/20
eyesight. Good vision starts
with the whole body being
healthy and complete.

Mistrial Declared In Black
Motorist’s Shooting
A South Carolina
judge declared a mistrial
Monday after a jury dead
locked in the murder trial of
a white former police offi
cer charged in the shooting
death of an unarmed black
motorist.
A panel of one
black and 11 white jurors
who had seemed close to a
verdict to convict Friday,
with apparently only one
holdout Said Monday they
were unable to reach a unan
imous decision after delib

over four days.
“We as a jury re
gret to inform the court that
despite the best efforts of
all parties we are unable to
come to a unanimous de
cision,” said Circuit Judge
Clifton Newman, reading
a note from the jury before
declaring a mistrial.
Fonner patrolman
Michael Slager was charged
with murder in the April
4, 2015, shooting death of
50-year-old Walter Scott.
The judge had said the jury
could also consider a lesser
charge of voluntary man
slaughter.
Cellphone video
taken by a bystander that
showed Scott being shot
in the back five times was
shown widely in the me
dia and on the internet and
shocked the country, inflam
ing the national debate about
how blacks are treated by
law enforcement officers.
After the video
went public, Slager was
fired by the police depart
ment and charged with mur
