part in Lift Every Voice:
Savannah’s African Ameri
can Historic Sites Free Day.
Eight Savannah cultural
organizations and sites
are collaborating to honor
the community’s African
American history in cele
bration of the recent open
ing of the Smithsonian Insti
tution’s National Museum
of African American Histo
ry and Culture. The event
will take place on Sunday,
August 20 from 12 p.m. - 4
p.m., offering visitors free
admission to the participat
ing sites.

Hobbs and Hinchey
Receive Awards For
Professionalism And
Advocacy
Dr. Joseph Hobbs Paul Hinchey
The longtime
chairman of the medical
school’s Department of
Family Medicine and the
president and CEO of the
Savannah health system
that serves as one home
base to students studying at
MCG’s Southeast Campus
were honored Friday by Dr.
David C. Hess, dean of the
Medical College of Georgia
at Augusta University.
Dr. Joseph Hobbs,
a 1974 graduate who also
is MCG’s senior associate
dean for faculty diversity
and primary care, received
the Professionalism Award.
Paul Hinchey, president and
CEO of St. Joseph’s/Candler
Health System in Savannah,
received the dean’s Commu
nity Advocate Award.
“Dr. Hobbs, one of
our earliest black graduates,
was a major driver and orga
nizer of this year’s rightful
recognition of the 50th an
niversary of the desegrega
tion of our medical school.
During his entire tenure with
us, he has been a tireless
advocate of his alma mater
and works daily to manage
a diverse faculty of clini
cians and educators dedi
cated to providing the next
generation of primary care
physicians,” Hess said. “Mr.
Hinchey was instrumental
in the development of our
second regional campus and
his continued support of our
medical students and faculty
are an essential part of our
statewide mission.”
Hobbs earned
a bachelor’s degree from
Mercer University in 1970
before coming to MCG.
After graduating from med
ical school, he completed a
family medicine residency,
including serving a year as
chief resident at MCG, be
fore joining the faculty. He
has served as the depart
ment’s residency program
director, inpatient service
director, student education
and clerkship directors, vice
chair of academic affairs
and associate dean for pri
mary care, before assuming
the role of chairman.

Smyre Receives Lifetime Achievement Award at Georgia
Legislative Black Caucus Held in Savannah

Conference in Savannah at
the DeSoto Hilton - Savan

10-12, 2017. The theme
was “One Georgia, One
Vision, One Future.” This
event was hosted by Senator
Lester Jackson, III, Chair
man; Representative Sandra
Scott, Vice Chairman and
Justin Tanner, Executive Di
rector.
On Friday, Au
gust 11th, during the Calvin
Smyre Economic Empower
ment Luncheon the Caucus
honored State Represen
tative Calvin Smyre with
the Lifetime Achievement
Award. His career path
has taken him from being
a community organizer and
director of “War on Pover
ty” program in Columbus
to his current position as
Executive Vice President,
Corporate External Affairs,
Synovus Financial Corp.
(Retired).
Smyre was elected
at the age of 27 and is now
the “Dean” of the Georgia
General Assembly. As a 43
year legislative veteran, he
serves on the most important
panels of the House: Appro
priations, Rules and Higher
Education.
Rep. Smyre has a
distinguished legislative re
cord which includes author
ing the legislation making
Dr. King’s birthday a state
holiday. He was also instru
mental and co-sponsor of
the historic legislation cre
ating a new Georgia State
Flag and the HOPE Scholar
ship Program.
Cassius F. Butts
was the keynote speaker
for the Luncheon. He stim
ulated the audience with his
testimony of being men
tored by the late Hon. May
or Maynard Jackson. Mr.
Butts is the fonner Regional
Administrator for the U. S.
Small Business Adminis
tration (SBA) appointed by
President Barack Obama in
2011.
