SafaviehTo Create 200Jobs and Invest
$60 Million In Savannah
Safavieh will continue to
increase our facilities across
the U.S. to provide better
and faster service to the cus
tomer.”
Headquartered in
New York City, Safavieh is
a 103-year-old international
home furnishings brand that
focuses on rugs, furnishings
and accents. Safavieh has
conducted business in the
Savannah area since 2012
and cited the Port of Savan
nah as a key factor in choos
ing to expand Southeastern
operations.
“On behalf of
GPA, I would like to thank
the Georgia Department of
Economic Development
for their work to bring
jobs and investment to our
state,” said GPA Executive
Director Griff Lynch. “We
are excited to welcome Sa-
favieh’s significant new
expansion in the Savannah
market. Private sector com
mitments such as this show
confidence in Savannah’s
continued success as a cargo
hub for the U.S. Southeast.
Safavieh’s announcement is
another example of the jobs
and opportunity drawn by
Georgia’s pro-business cli
mate and logistical advan
tages.”
“Savannah has be
come a hotbed for industry
leaders like Safavieh to find
a home, and this is another
great win for the region,”
said GDEcD Commissioner
Pat Wilson. “In 2015, Safa
vieh announced Savannah
as its location for a facility
that would create 100 jobs
and $28 million in invest
ment and their announce
ment today of an additional
200 jobs in the next three
years and $60 million in
capital investment is a true
testament to the growth that
businesses in Savannah are
experiencing,” said Savan-

Authority President and
CEO Trip Tollison. “Along
with GDEcD and GPA, we
look forward to continuing
to partner and support them
as they grow in Savannah.”
“The creation
of an additional 200 jobs
by Safavieh over the next
three years is fantastic news
for Savannah,” said Steve
Green, chairman of the Sa
vannah Economic Devel
opment Authority. “It is the
creation of jobs like these
that help fuel our economy
and make a lasting impact
on our region.”
The visitors were also greet
ed by Dr. Cheryl Daven
port Dozier, President of
Savannah State University.
Dr. Dozier paid tribute to
COD founder, Dr. Abigail
Jordan, who tenaciously
pursued her doctorate de
gree and later used that
same determination to lead a
movement to install the first
African-American Family
Monument in America that
was unveiled on July 27,
2012 in Savannah’s Rou-
sakis Plaza. Dr. Dozier also
enlightened and inspired the
group with a forward-think
ing outlook for Savannah
State University and higher
education in coastal Geor
gia.
After Dr. Dozier’s
remarks, James saluted his
long-time friend, Dr. Debo
rah Cole, for her remarkable
contributions to banking.
She is America’s longest
serving African-American
female bank president. “Dr.
Cole is a role model for all
bankers, especially Afri
can American females who
aspire to hold positions of
leadership in the industry,”
he said.
James told the
crowd of Savannah commu
nity dignitaries and national
leaders that they were wit
nessing “an interesting bit
of African American history,
since we have at this recep
tion both the longest serv
ing African American bank
president in the nation as
well as the longest serving
African American female
bank president.” James has
been President of Carver
State Bank since December
1, 1971, which makes him
the longest serving African
American bank president in
America.
Dr. Cole is pres
ident of the nation’s oldest
continuously operating Afri
can American-owned bank,
Citizens Savings Bank and
Trust Company, which was
founded as The One Cent

1904. Richard Henry Boyd
served as the bank’s first
president, and his family
remains the major stock
holder of the bank, and his
great-great-grandson, Dr. T.
B. Boyd, III, is the current
chairman of the board. In
1920, the bank was renamed
Citizens Savings Bank and
Trust Company.
Dr. Cole is a Past

A native of Nash
ville, Cole graduated from
Hume-Fogg High School
and attended Tennessee
State University, where she
earned her bachelor’s and
master’s degrees in business
administration with high
distinction. A lifelong learn

Leadership and Organiza
tional Skills from the Uni

accountant in 1975. Four
years later, she joined the
staff of Citizens Bank. She
was appointed to the board
in 1985, and named presi
