Dissertation Abstract
There are many studies fo
cusing on at-risk young Af
rican American males living
in the inner city experienc
ing poverty and disparities,
yet there are few examining
the impact of African Amer
ican male role models who
have experienced similar
plights, moved on to great
ness, returning to live in the
same inner city neighbor
hood they grew up in. Using
a qualitative approach this
study focused on the needs
of the young inner city Afri
can American males lacking
the skills needed to develop
into successful adults. I
conducted this research to
assist with bringing aware

male mentors in the inner
city to be living examples
for the younger black males.
I believe that if the younger
generation of black males
can see the success of the
older generation of black
males still living in the inner
city, hope will arise for the
teens and life will be better
for us all. It is my wish that
more of the successful black
males would understand
their intrinsic value and
continue to live in the inner
city, on the same streets they
grew up on and assist with
the growth process of the
young black males. I really
feel young African Amer
ican males need to know
more than reading, writing,
and arithmetic; young Af
rican American males need
the time and attention of
successful older African
American males that really
care to assist in the transi
tion from teen to adult suc
cessfully. In short, we need
more neighborhood dads
back in our inner cities!
