SSU President Accepts First
Installment Of $100,000 Award

(AKA), in partnership with
the Educational Advance
ment Foundation (EAF),
has pledged $100,000 to
Savannah State Universi
ty’s (SSU) endowment as
a part of the organization’s
AKA-HBCU Endowment
Fund. The funds support
student scholarships at SSU.
On February 28, 2019, SSU
President Cheryl Davenport
Dozier accepted the first in
stallment of the institution’s
award.
AKA is an inter
national service organiza
tion that was founded on the
campus of Howard Univer
sity in Washington, D.C. in
1908. It is the oldest Greek
letter organization estab
lished by African-American
college-educated women.
On Saturday, Feb
ruary 2, 2019 the FILS (Fu
ture Iota Leaders) Auxiliary
of Nu Chapter of Iota Phi
Lambda Sorority, Inc. in
ducted two new members
(Kyra Bradshaw and An
gelas Greene). The FILS
is a youth program that
provides socialization and
development opportunities
as well as leadership train
ing. Any youth, male or
female, between the ages of
8 to 18 is eligible to become
a FIL. The youth are under
the leadership of Soror Lisa
Barnes and Soror Ursula
Green. Scholarship opportu
nity is available at the local,
regional and national levels
to high school seniors who
desire to pursue a postsec
ondary degree in business,
science and engineering.
This event was only open to
current FIL members, Soror
ity members and parents.

ing the month attends Coast
al Middle School and is in
eighth grade. One teacher
describes her as a student
who “is so motivated, car
ing and such a great help to
teachers and others.”
While she is cur
rently taking many honors
classes, she stays for tutorial
when needed and dedicates
her time to her academics.
She is REACH Scholar
nominee, yearly Honor Roll
student, and on the prin
cipal’s Honor Roll. Addi
tionally, she is a member of
the Duke University Talent
Identification Program and
the National Junior Honor
Society.
Not only does she
volunteer with her school’s
wrestling team, but she also
volunteers with Senior Cit
izens Inc. She has set real
istic goals for high school,
college and career that are
attainable and meaningful to
her. She says, “Having aca
demic success allows me to
strive to be the most excel
lent me I can be. It will al
low me to do great things!”

en’s History Month and
Irish Heritage with a lecture
by Dr. Michael Schroed-
er on Flannery O’ Connor.
The lecture will be held on
Wednesday, March 20, 2019
at the Massie Heritage Cen
ter. It is free and open to the
public. Doors open at 6.30
pm and the lecture begins at
7.00 pm.
Dr. Schroeder is a
retired professor of English
and Chair of the Department
of English and Languages at
Savannah State University,
and currently serves as Pres
ident of the Board of Direc
tors of the Flannery O’Con
nor Childhood Home. He
has published articles and
presented numerous confer
ence papers on O’Connor
and other American writers.
