HTThe Knoxville Journal, although
small in size, will contain in a few weeks
from now the essence of as much newsy
intelligence as can be found in any otlier
Georgia weekly. No indecorous or ob¬
jectionable matter can ever find its way
into the columns of this paper, but the
publisher will always strive to give the
public instructing, interesting and useful
reading matter.
While Judge ’Stewart’s proposed bill t<
pay a eertain class of deserving war claims
is somewhat limited in scope, yet it is sup¬
ported by magnanimity and carries with it
a commendable purpose.
The Blair T du ational Bill in its pros
ent shape is virtually dead. With certain
modifications that might be effected by ju¬
dicious committee work, its resurrection
cornea within flic bounds of extreme possi¬
bilities.
On last Sunday Mr. James H- Campbell,
the manager of the Macon Te’egraph am
a prominent and useful citizen of that towi
diid. He was a person of much energy
and was noted for always directing that
where it would do the most good.
Subjects of the Queen in Canada have t
respect the English flags whether or no.
A citizen of Toronto found tins out th
otliei day, when he was arrested aud finci
far displaying in front of liis' store a unio:
jack bearing an advertisement of the bar
gains to be found inside.
Mr. Evarts sccDiS lo be oTtener on th
wrong than the right side of political is
si.es. He ought to reverse the order, o !
things occasional} - and j red ably the chai; <
of feelings which he would expetienc
might make a different man of him. It i.
better to be right once than never.
The action of the ei y corn cil of Atlant
a short time since indicates the death of th
“black listing” ordinance. Repetition o
charges against parties for drut kennes;
will be dealt with in a diffeteut manner
but the punishment of of th se who indulg
in repeated violations of the law will b
no lesB severe under the proposed changes
If the South were forced to deal with ; s
many strikes among her laboring class s a.
the North, there mitght then be some rea
son in that section being snpnmly anxious
about the condition of the negro in the
country. Cuflee doesn't injure himself In
Work, g ts abundant pay fir vvhat he does
and consequently seldom engages in such
foolery as a strike.
It is the duty of the Govevi.or to exact
of the lessees humane treatment of con¬
victs, hut it is goin g a little too far to make
government pets of the boys in stripes.
In any community there are people who
are always ready to predict the failure of
any enterprise that may spring up ; it mat¬
ters not how little they may know of the
business which they talk about. In this
immediate vicinity there are people who
did not believe we were going to.- have a
railroad. They' did not believe we could
haVH a paper, and now after it has started
they do not believe it can live but a short
while. Of course this does not hurt the
paper much for most of Crawford’s citizens
are public spirited people and are giviug
The Journal all the support we can
expect- We have a ready succeeded in
securing enough patronage to run this pa¬
per until next Christmas, aud certainly
will run it until then and for some years to
come, if Providence will not interfere.
