dance at the residence of Mr. J. R. Beland
night before fast.

has moved to Mac-on,
The mountain country is not more health
fu! than Crawford county. W’e are indeed
blest in many respects.
There is very little news to be gotten up
this week. Every oDe stems to be attend,

Mr. B. LeSuer is improving from his
recent illuess and will likely be around
soon to see his friends about town.
Mathews & Danielly advertise lumber
for sale at low prices, and we advise yon
to patronize them when in need of lumber.

Blasingame s store. W hen you want first
class board stop at the Blasingame House.
Judging by appearances about town
we wonld say that there are more people
at work now than have been at any time
this year.
Mr. Boliver Ray was in town Sunday
shaking hands with old friends. Macon
is his home, but his heart is with Knox¬
ville friends.
The citizens i,f our town are just now in
a state ol enthusiasm which will resolve in
to a genuine boom with very liule en¬
couragement,
, We w <sb every farmer in the county to
make a good crop and to take this paper
and it is certain that they will not do as
well without the paper.
The grading of the Atlanta & Florida
railroad is nearly done. Only a few miles
remain to be graded—probably not more
than eight or ten miles of light work.
The rent that is charged for land near
the Georgia railroad will buy good land
in this county. From two to six dollars
per acre will buy very good land here.
Everything indicates that there is going
to be a marrying epidemic about here
soon. All the young people who are not
making preparations for a wedding would
like to do so, it seems.
Let every man who feels an interest in
the welfare of his county come up and sub¬
scribe lor The Joubnai.. A good little
paper is worth more than most any other
institution in a county like Crawford.
Mr. William McAtee hag taken a posi¬
tion in this office. The publisher esteems
Mr. McAfee as one of onr best citizens, and
with his aid The Jovbnai. will be prepar¬
ed to ride over temporary obstacles more
easily.
A caravan of nomadic Irish (commonly
called Gypsies) passed through town yes¬
terday. Tbeir possessions, so far as
seen consisted of several wagons, about
thirty horses, a shepherd dog and a grey
bound.
We want correspondents at Ceres, Clarks
Mill, P.obley, Sandy Point, HicKory Grove,
Taylor's store, Lamar's Mill, Warrior and
Whitewater. If we can get the dots every
week Irom each place the paper will be
much better.
The print r- in this office have been pnt
to a great deal of trouble by people hand¬
ling the type. A slight touch of the hand
may do several dollars’ damage, and visit,
ors ought not to touch anything in the
printing office. We Jove company but

Mr. W. P. Allen, who is collecting agent
for Coleman, Ray & Co., of Macon, alter
a two weeks trip through adjoining counties

terday. He seems to think that times are
as flush in this county as they are any
where he has been.

getting ready for the lew era of prosperity
which is bound to dawn upon this town
in a shirt time. He is painting the hotel
and improving bis premises in various way
The hotel has been without- a register until
two or three days ago. When the new
book came Mr Harris appeared as proud
of it as a little boy is of his first pair of
breeches.
Streets to be Opened.
The County Commissioners Tuesday
passed an order to have a new street opened
between the house occupied by Dr. Sawyer
and the church lot. "Some of our citizens
are determined tc have Knoxville improve,
and additional streets are needed. Thi

In passing through sections of tins coun¬
ty the most casual observer will notice
that the “no fence law is in active opera¬
tion. Already- lines of fencing along the
public roads and else where on the planta¬
tions have disappeared as if by magic. Of
coarse the fences thus removed go first of
all to do service in in enclosing pastures
for cattle, hogs etc., but it is evident from
the reernt marvelous growth of several
wood-piles in the country that many an
old rail is being ntiltzeJ as firewood. It
needs no argument to impress ubon the
minds of people who have experimented
with rails in this direction that, tor making
a rousing fire, good dry pine or oak rails
cannot be excelled. About the first thing
that will occur to the minds of most men,
and boys especially, after the pasture fence
L built will be where is the economy or
c nitnon sei.se in leaving the balance of
t lose rails to lie there and be good for
n ithing instead of coutrbuting tueir shine
to the warmth and con f rt of the home.
In one of the excavations recently made
o i the railroad a mile or two above town,
at a depth of perhaps twenty or thirty
feet, mostly rock, a very pretty layer of
s': ue bearing considerable resemblance to
granite, was noticed. Several pieces *!-■ -
unined had the appearance of being filled
with myriads of , r.stals being, however,
altogether unlike isinglass frequently met
with noder similar circumstances. It is
not claimed that this formation is of any
special value or importance* Perhaps
these railroaders will unearth a gold mine
y it somewhere on this part of the line
