In Liberty county Selas Sapp eloped
with Mrs. Anna Bird, a widow. Mrs
Kird’s lather, when he heard of the mar¬
riage, was greatly enraged. He fired into
Sapp with a shotgun, then swallowed a
dose of poison and died. Sapp will recover.
At Albany Friday John R. Lee, a prom¬
inent planter and once a wealthy man, was
tried before a jury on lunacy and found a
fit subject for the asylum. His wife was
appointed his guardian. His mind has
been weakened by a series of financial loss¬
es, short crops and other similar troubles.
A prominent country merchant of For¬
syth county has been arrested and given
bond for selling a blood medicine which it
is claimed is intoxicating.

One of the most important sales of real
estate made iu Thomaaville for years, was
consummated Saturday night by Judge
Hopkins. He sold 260 feet front, of the
lower end of the Hayes block cm Broad
street running back to Madison street, to
Selah R. Van Huzer, of New York, for the
sum of $10,000.
At Cartersvilie Mr. Withers, from Tus¬
caloosa,. Ala., has selected a site for a foun¬
dry and machine shop, and will move there
at once. Other parties are negotiating for
a site fo*- sash, door and blind factory.

A young negro living on S. II, Wilson’s
place, near Griffin, had three fingers blown
off one hand on Sunday. Ho was whist¬

which he had found, when a companion
asked to examine it. He did so, and upon
findiug some white substance at the hots
tom proposed the brilliant idea of sticking
a lighted match iu it while the owner held
it in his hand Tho boy holding the car¬
tridge said he never heard the explosion.

boy.

J. A. Bennett, Ordinary of Dade county,
met with a ver.f painful accident Monday.
While working with a bottle containing a
preparation of nitric acid and quicksilver,
he withdrew the cork, when the contents
boiled out, striking him in the eyes and on
both hands. His right eye is badly burned,
and fears are entertained of bis losiug the
sight of that eye. Ilis hands and wrists
are fearfully burned. His little daughter,
was burned slightly.
During last year ninety-eight public
schools were taught in Houston county,
and 3,168 pupils attended these schools.
There were forty-six schools for whites, at
tenbed by 1.112 pupils, and fifty-four for
colored children, attended by 2,056 pupils.
The‘total amount paid teachers from the
public school fund was $5,940.66.
Saturday night Frank Tson got on a
general tare at Griffin. With a Winchester
rifle he shot and killed Mol lie Cotton, col¬
ored, and Dock Thrash Ison is a des¬
perate chaiactcr and has leit for unknown
parts. Mollie Cotton and Doc Thrash had
bcen living together and had lased a
quarrel with Sue Brown, a white woman,
with whom Ison had been living. Jlson in
a spirit of revenge killed Mollie Cottou
ana Thrash.
Little Lamar Jones, the ll-ycar-old son
of Dr. Chan. Jones, of Eatouton, is un¬
doubtedly an inventive genius. Though
quite a child he has invented a plow, an
elevator, an engine and many other things
remarkable in their way for a child. Ho
has also drawn a go.>d map from memory,
of New Orleans, and it is predicted that if
he lives to man's estate his name will be
famous.
