Col. H. A. Mathews, of Fort Valley,
was in town Tuesday on profcsioual busi¬
ness.
Sheriff Hartley arrested a negro, Berry
Hudson, last night,. He is wanted in Pike
county.
The Editor is under- obligations to
Dr. Sawyer for a gift, of some nice Spring
vegetables.
Mr. J. W. Blasingame has been engaged
this week in taking the school census Jor
the county.
Col. R. Di.Smith is going to* Have a
handsome and commodious house, when
his new one is finished:.
Miss Lizzie L*-ng was badly hurt by
being thrown from a buggy by a horse
running away last Monday.
Farmers about Knoxuiile are constantly
improving their stock,.and in this matter
they aro-showing good sense.
If some party wishes to make money, it
can be made out of a first class- family
grocery business in Knoxville.
The school boys have organized a debat
ing society, and the fight between oppos¬
ing sides is lively at times. Go it hoys.
The young ladies are in favor of a picnic
and a well goiten up basket dinner along
with it. The Journal seconds the motion.
Miss Belle Bcelaml has returned to her
home in Taylor county, af er spending
some time with her. brother, Mr. J. R
Beelanil.
The negro that was run down by anotner
negro and a dog, aDd caught in this coun¬
ty, last week, was carried to Houston Tiles
day for trial:
Mr. J. B. Stembridgo came out- from
Macon Monday for Mrs. Stembridgo and
the children, and returned with them
Tuesday morning.
A popular young lady of town says that
she has been feeling a little louely since
Tuesday, but that she doesn’t exactly
know the reason for it.

Dr. Sawyer now stands head on fishing.
While fishing for trout a few days ago he
caught a King snake about five leet in
length. Who can beat it ?
Mr. H; D. McCrary says that he expects
an abundauce of grapes from his. vineyard
this year. The prospect for a .large yield
is as good as could bo desired!.
Nearly all the ladies in and around town
have had pictures taken of their little ones

There has been some need for u jail since
Mr. Hatcher began tearing down the ofd
ouo. It will be only a short time before
work will begin on the new jail,
Mr. Joe Jordan passed through town
yesterday with,a load of cotton bound for
Macon. This load is the first lot of his
last year’s crop. He’s a farmer.
The picture man, Mr. O’Neil, who has
been indisposed several days, is again able
to make a picture and indulge in a hearty
laugh, which is one delight of his life.
Knoxville’s millinery store is on a regn
lar boom. Every lady always wants a
new hat, and quite a number have suppli¬
ed their wants-in this line right, here in
towns
Col. 0. P. Wright was tho editor in
charge several days this week. If-ho had
staid in charge all the week this issue of
the paper would have beeu more inter¬
esting.
Fayette Anltman says that it is worth
one hundred dollars to hear.Mr. O’Neil
laugh. It’s a laugh that is hard to beat,
but the one who furnishes iti doesn’t charge
ia cent.

In the near ftiture Knoxville will he a
railroad town. Before many months have
passed and.gone there will be a beautiful
and prosperous city right here where tho
little town of Kucxvills now stand*.
The forests-between this place and Fort
Valley art completely lined: with oross ties
for the F railroad. Every body and
•all of his kin are getting, anxious to see a
train come in on the Atlanta and Florida.
Playing marbles has not Been, indulged
in so much this week as heretofore, but
there will be a revival in this lir.s when

The Editor went to Americas Sunday to
meet his family who were on their way to
Knoxville, and returned with them Mon¬
day eveuing. The Editor pro tem. extends
to Mrs. Howell aud the little one a hearty
welcome.
Messrs. J, F. Andrews and J’. R. Bee
land took a fish in Taylor county a few
days ago and report good luck. Mr.
Andrews reques's that nothing more be
added at this time, hence this notice must
lose its spice..
The farmers alliance met here Saturday,
and appointed a committee to arrange for
the trade of the organization. They will
very probably establish a retail business of
their own here, to be supplied by. some
Atlanta house.

pulled up stakes-and left town. He is*
now- located at Taylor’s Store, in this
county. He ts one of the noblest- hearted
men on the American Continent and bo is
among some of. the beet* people in
w-hole world.
Several bales- of cotton have recently
been carried through Knoxville,, on the.
way to Macon. It is very plain to any*
thoughtful person that it is hurtful to

Wednesday. Meeting acquaintances and
friends after a lapse of several years is al¬
ways an incident of genuine pleasu re.

Mr. Jas. N. Mathews, a- very highl}'
esteemed citizen of our county, died at his*
homo nefr town, on last Tuesday morning.
The writer had knov. n Mr. Mathews a
number of years and. has- never met v
kinder, nor a more generous hearted man.
He was a kind father, a. loving husband,
and an upright, useful citizen. He died
of Pneumonia, after several days of intense
suffering.
