We, the Grand Jury, selected and sworn
to serve at this, the October term, 1888, of
Grawford Superior Court, submit the fol¬
lowing General presentments of such mat¬
ters as we are called upon to report.
We find that the public roads goner
ally over the county are in fair condition,
and we are pleased to report that there has
been some improvement along tbfc line
within'the past-few months.,
The Courthouse is in good condition.
Work is-rapidly progressing on the con¬
struction of-'the new Jail.
Wo have-appointed on the county board
of Education John S. Blasingame of the
494th District G. M. and Thos. 0. Vinson
in. the 582nd District. We also recom¬
mend R. V.Nichols Notary Public for, the
532r.fl District G. M. and A. J. Danielly

We recommend that, the Obtinty Com¬
missioners erase the name of Mrs M. Ham¬
lin irora Pauper list. Wo also recommend
that the various Jurors be paid two dollars
ppr diem for next year, ahd that the rid¬
ing Bailiffs be paid three dollars for day
and night service, and that-otiier Bailiffs
be paid two dollars per day.
We have carefully examiuod the tax re¬
turned. and find that some of the real es¬
tate has not been properly assessed, and
have turned over to the'Clerk of this court
a list of said property to he given to tax
received for future assessment
We recommend that the County Com¬
missioners furnish a safe deposit for the use
of Cierk of Court for his papers.
■,Ye unanimously tender to his Honor,
Judge Gustin, our sincere thanks for
kindnesses extended our- body during the
present term, and are more than gratified
by having in the position which he now
occupies, one who presides over the bus
ness of our courts with extraordinary ease,
dignity and ability.
It is with regret t. we part with our
present Solicitor Geliral, Hardeman, who
has,, for so» long, counseled and advised with
the Gaand Juries of our county. We take
this occasion to return him our thanks for
all favors shown us, and trust that the
position which,he now fills may in the fn
ture be held bv one possessed of like wis
dom, skill and kindness of disposition.

Mrs. J. Mi Webb went to
Tuesday to-see her daughter, Miss Annie,
who is quite ill. ,
Mr. M. JV Moore went to Macon one day
last week and brought out a rousing stock
of winter goods,
Mr, H. F. Sanders has offered a building
lot at the station free to some of our young
men it they would build on it and tuarry.
We send this to the Journal hoping
young ladies "will read it and know our
boys mean business when they come.
Sometime ago a cider manufactory was
established in Marshallville by; Mr. Jack
Slappey. In a short time the demand was
greater, than could be supplied, shipping at
least's car load of cider and vinegar a day.
To meet the, increasing demand the works
were discontinued in Marsh'illville and the
feritory divided between Americas and
Columbus, at which places works are now
firmly estalished.
Last Monday, as R’T. Mill was going to
Sylvauia, about a mile above-the towny he
saw a iArgo bawfe on the ground, appa¬
rently closely watching some object. As
he approached nearer the hawk made a
swoop, and rising “in the air had an im
rner.se black snake about 5feet long secure
ly gripped by the head, As the hawk
soared away with it, the snake was lashing
the air with its tail.
A negro arrived at the Sumter county
poor house Wednesday who stated that Be
was from Isabella, Worth county, and was
on his way to visit his relatives, 'when he
was takcu sick. He stopped at a negro’s
house in Sumter county, where ho paid
his board until his money gave out.. After
his mouey was gone he was-turned out of
and lay three days and nights without’food
or attend on. A white man found him and
carried him’to (the poor house, where he
died Thursday evening.
There is a well known lady in Wilkes
county, who has enjoyed perfect health
since the earthquake of two years ago. For
several years up to that time ber health
had been declining, and she was then quit
feeble. The physicians said the trouble
was that she never perspired-. When the
great carthquaks came she was considera¬
bly frighten, and in a few moments the
perspirration came freely from every pore.
She began to improve from that mo¬
ment, and soon regained her health, •
Burglars entered the store of J. L. Mil
ton, at- Hazlehurst on Thursday night and
carded away quite a selection of jewelry,
clothing, hats, shoes, etc. They demolish¬
ed the cash drawer in their search for jvalv

provided that the sum of $10,000 in cash
subscriptions be first secured.

beds at Atlanta Saturday morning, Whis¬
ky was the cause of the deaths.
It is reported that a man in Madison
had his first wife’s funeral preaced a few

R. L. Reaves is a young jockey who
owned and sat behind John G - and Will
O’Farrell at the North Georgia and Ala¬
bama exposition. Reaves won several ra¬
ces there and was quite flush when the ex¬
position. He also sold Jone of his trotters
to Tom Echols of Floyd county, pocketing
quite a roll of bills, A few days ago Rea¬
ves took the train from Knoxville for
Rome, and earned his mu Dey in his vest
pocket. Ho fell asleey on the train, and
while he snoozed his money was stolen.
There is no,clue to the thief...
