November 2G is the day set by President
. -Cleveland lor a national thanksgiving day.
During next year the republicans will
; air that familiar old democratic chestnut,
•“ Turn the rascals out. 1 '
It may be remarked that the democratic
party got left in the recent election because
• ■Cleveland was too far ahead of his party.
The weather has been behaving badly
since Cleveland’s defeat. When the wicked
.
..shall rule the nations will mourn The
poor will be oppressed as loug as days of
• republican mis-rule shall last.
On Wednesday of last week the Georgia
Legislature convened in bi-ennial session.
"Tii - limit of time allowed for this session is
.-is forty days. We predict- that this body
will not waste time as those before it have
..done.
The citizens of Birmingham have to pay
nearly two dollars more per ton for Ala¬
bama coal than is charged for it in Now,
■ Orleans. Yet some people advocate iha<
protective policy which admits of this dis
. .crimination and worse.
At most places which have grown since
the advent- of the railroad there lias been a
goo-.l deal of “put-ynur-shoulde-to-the
wheel” kind of talk, and there hasihoen a
■good deal of hard pushing along with it.
At Knoxville the case has been different,
i’here has been some talking, but very little
• pushing, but Knoxville, by the very force
if its own advantages is marching ahead
. of its neighbors.
The democratic party will he bonchttcd
when the United States Senate and House
, of Representatives shall both have a re¬
publican majority for two years. That
party will then have the undivided re¬
sponsibility fi-r the government, and if its
power be abused, it will then be all the
more easy to vote it out. Antagonism
between the house and the senate seems to
work cliaat vantagoously.
The Atlanta Constitution would like to
see Senator Colquitt beaten. That paper
warned Senator Colquitt some months ago
, against taking a stand for fa iff reform, and
threatened to oust him if he failed to work
lor pm t -ction. Colquitt is for'the people,
and the Constitution is for th se who would
like to rule the politics of th s state. The
one represents the Commonwealth; tie
ather the bosses.
The next republican administration will
be likely to .show n o e favors to the South j
than any which has b en in power since tbe
^
war. The protective wing of the demo¬
cratic party—which is almost virtually tbe
.came as the republican p; rty—is of suffl
sient size in this section to demand recog¬
nition of the party in power, and this fact j i
i til .itself is sufficient jroutd .fcr the belief
»
that the relations between the two great
parties will be. more amicable.
