Mr. Caspar Wright is visiting relatives,

Mr. John W. B’a-ingame. expects to
erect a large two-story store, building be¬
fore long.
Messrs. W. H. Dent, B. H. Ray and
Wm. Harris, of Macon, have been, in town
during the. week.
Miss LenaBlasingame, cf Zebulon, spent
several days this week with the family of
Mr. Frank Wright.
Miss Mary Howell, an accomplished
y. ung lady of Zebulon, spent several days
this week in Knoxville. .
Mr. B. M. Lanneau, of Atlanta, wag ip
town most of the week iu the interest of
tbo Fidelity insurance company.
Dr. John W. Wright, of White Plains,
Greene county, spent several days recently
in town, with his son, Col. 0, P- Wright.
The farmers are busy killing hogs and
making syrup. The meat and the cane
crops are larger than qsual in Crawford
county.
J. H. Nolan is selling a good deal of
furniture these days. Peopie have, learned
to buy here at city prices, and save freight
expenses.
Teal and mallard ducks are numerous op
the mill ponds this season. Mr. Clark
Ilicks reports killing 16 ducks at two shots,
some time ago.
The people are beginning to learn yvhat
a good country this old couuty is, .and fhey
are coming in as fast as houses can be made
ready for them.
When you go to Atlanta stop at the
Talmadge House, opposite custom house on
north side. We find this one of the best
pLces iu the Gate City.
Mr. J P. Blasingame, of the northern
portion of the county, was iu to see us
yesterday. He is one of the most progress¬
ive farmers of his section.
The Editor and wife are under obliga¬
tions to Mr. John Jenkins for some fine,
fresh < ranges, which were shipped direct
from his old home in Florida.
The Editor received from Mr. W. J,
Dept, a few days ago, half a dozen sweet
potatoes that looked like grown pumpkins
at a distance. A dozen or two ot this size
of potatoes would last an av^iage family,
though the winter.
The Allen corner store is being fitted up
for the use of Mr- J. J. Hanes, who will
occupy it with a big stock of goods when
the work shall bave been done.
Mr.Z. T. Harris is having another tittle
cottage built, and speaks of having two
others erected shortly. He is interested in
the upbuilding of Knoxville, and is doing
his part towards it.
A Mule Killed.

Mr. Bill Hamlin lost a fine mule while
bn his way to Macon, the other day, which
met its death in. rather a singular manner.
: While the stock,were feeding, a colt be¬
longing to. Bob Yates kicked Hamlin's mule,
breaking a rib. It is thougnf that the
mule bled internally,, for he died shortly
after beipg. kicked by the colt.

There w.as a good, deal of excitement ,4n
town yesterday,-evening about dusk, -v,hen
the two negro prisoners, Si-Ross, and,Jim
Davis were reported loose „ and running
about town.
As the new jail bas.pol been finished the
prisoners have been, con fined in the court
house,.and guards .bove been placed over
them.
The.prisoners were confined with heavy
chains which were fastened to their necks.
It seems that the guard had stepped out of
the room to mail a letter, when the two
negroes broke up a chair and wrenched:the
chain in two at the end which was .was
bolted the.house. They then wrapped the
Chains, which Was still dangling about
their necks, with a blanket and together
jumped put of the second story window.
Though hotly chaSed they made good their
escape. The blanket deadened the sound
so that they could not followed by the rat¬
ling ofthe chain.
