HARD WORKERS Perry Police
Department detectives include Bryan
Emmons, Leyon Roberts, Heath Dyices,
Ken Ezell, Andrew Calvin Proffitt, and
Evidence
who placed it in the cabinet
cannot get it back out.
Security and identification
of evidence that is placed
behind the double doors in
the department’s evidence
room is aimed at being
error-proof.
“We're redundant."
Detective Ken Ezell, who is
in charge of the evidence
room, explained. “We have
three different systems to
record who has touched
any piece of evidence or
even been near it.”
With thousands of indi
vidual items of evidence
including everything from
rifles and handguns to
“rocks" of cocaine * the
security system for the evi
dence room is elaborate.
So is the system for iden
tification. It’s even tornado
proof, according to Ezell,
who points out that even if
by some freak accident the
evidence got scattered, it is
all barcoded for quick and
accurate identification.
The scrupulously care
fully handling of evidence is
important because detec
tives frequently are called
on to testify in court, and
must be certain that there
has been no opportunity for
evidence to be mislaid or
tampered with.
In the case of suspected
homicide, Dykes says, the
body is moved from the
scene last.
But at that point, the
investigation has just
begun. In addition to gath
ering evidence following a
crime, the Periy detectives
interview potential witness
es and suspects and keep
detailed written records.
“Eighty percent of my
work is paperwork, “ Dykes
said. “I have talked to kids
in classrooms and asked
them what they think is the
most important tool I have.
They say its my gun, but I

“You have to make sure
all your I's are dotted, and
T's are crossed," he added.
“A case could get thrown
out of court if you don’t."
Whether the work is on
the crime scene or behind a
desk. Dykes is well pre
pared for his work. A good
example of the increasingly
educated and professional
Perry Police Department,
Dykes earned his degree in
criminal justice from
Georgia Southern
University.
However, he notes that
he has “also learned from
veteran officers."

"Seasoned officers are
the backbone of any
department,” he said.
“They’ve been there and
done that."
Noting that in a small
department such as
Perry’s, each detective
wears “many hats"
Dykes also says that each
of the Perry detectives has
special talents and areas of
expertise that are helpful in
making assignments.
Others on the force, in
addition to Dykes and
Ezell, are Leyon Roberts,
Andrew “Drew" Dodson,
Calvin Proffitt, and Perry’s
newest detective, Bryan
Emmons. The department
secretary is Gail Price.
