Fishermen share secrets on where to find Lake Jackson hybrids
(EDITOR S NOTE: This
is the second in a series
of stories by John
Trussell about fishing
opportunities in the mid
state. This week, Trussell
reports on Lake Jackson.)
.Just as tilt* early morn
ing • haze was clearing off
the lake surface, the action
started. Like popcorn
lumping off a hot pan, the
shad began leaping into the
air in all directions, franti
cally attempting to elude
their pursuers below the
surface.
Like herded cattle in a
pen, the shad were cor
nered and encircled by the
hungry hybrids below. The
water boiled and popped as
the hybrids fed with gusto.
The noise quickly attract
ed several fishermen who
moved to the edge of the
activity and began casting

First grade students at Tucker Elemen
tary got a rare treat May 27 when Perry
High School Senior Jeb Stewart demon
strated several points of Tae Kwon Do.
Stewart said he wanted to give the chil
dren an overview of his favorite sport to
ready them for their June 2 Sports Day.
According to Dee Hayes, a Tucker first
grade teacher, “We have asked various peo
ple in different types of sports to come and
talk about their sport so the children can
see there are more sports than baseball
and football.”
Stewart, a fourth degree black belt,
explained the various stages of Tae Kwon
Do. He said the beginners really work on
stances and movements. Only when some
one reaches the stage of red belt does one
begin to break boards.
“It helps with discipline. It teaches Yes,
Sir; No, Sir, " stated Stewart, adding Tae
Kwon Do also teaches respect.
The little faces watched intently as Stew
art explained and then demonstrated each
movement stances, punches, and kicks.
Stewart told the youngsters, “We always
take our shoes off before entering the stu
dio. We bow and then we get into our ready
position."
After demonstrating the kick, Stewart
said. “There is never a reason to fight.

they had landed several

as it began, the surface was

This scene is repeated
countless times on Geor

including Lake Jackson.

of Kersey’s Marina, located
on Tussahaw Creek.
Kersey said that Neil
Eamhart and Paul Yancey
are two of the most avid
hybrid fishermen on the
lake, and yes, confirms
Earnhart, “1 go every
chance 1 get in the sum
mertime, usually at least 2
- 3 times per week."
Earnhart is a retired cor
rectional officer with the
Georgia Department of Cor
rections. Yancey, age 76 is
also retired and is Earn
hart’s frequent fishing com
panion.
Earnhart said the best
opportunity for Lake Jack
son’s hybrids occur in late
June or the first of July
when the fish start busting
shad on the surface.
“You don’t have to guess
where the fish are then,
said Earnhart because of
four shut-out innings on
the mound. He gave up one
hit and had seven strike
outs for Alltel. Bake
Yarbrough of Alltel had a
game-winning double, an
RBI and he scored two runs
as Alltel downed MMM. 4-2.
Timmy McCoy led MMM
with two singles and a dou

Barfield had a single, a
double and an RBI.
In the second game.
Michael Deibert was the
inning pitcher for Tolleson.
He pitched six innings, gave

Warning the children “not to try to do
these things at home or with friends,”
Stewart demonstrated the art of breaking
boards with various kicks and an elbow
punch.
Stewart learned Tae Kwon Do from the
Perry Athletic Karate studio. He has been
studying the martial art for 11 years.
Between the applause and shouts of
awe, Stewart told the youngsters that
“visualizing himself breaking the boards"
prior to actually do it, is very important.
The afternoon exhibit brought loud
cheers. Stewart performed a running jump
kick- flying over a chair and breaking a
board with a kick.
He is a Tucker alumnus.
