Stalnaker: County landfill is good operation
By JOAN DORSETT
Home Journal Statt
Houston County Public
Works Director Tommy
Stalnaker told Perry Kiwa
nis Club members they
would be pleased if they
visited the Houston County
Landfill.
Speaking to members of
the club June 22, Stalnaker
used the opportunity to give
an update on several coun
ty projects.
Stalnaker said the
municipal solid waste land
fill off Ga. 247 about two
miles from Pulaski County
is a Sub-Title D facility.
This means the landfill is
a lined facility. What is

nakdr said the landfill has
the most competitive tip
ping fees in the state and is
also used by Bleckley,
Pulaski and Dooly counties
and the city of Byron.
The landfill receives
approximately 400 tons per
day of municipal solid
waste and construction and
demolition materials. Stal
naker said this amounts to
125,000 tons on an annual
basis.
Houston County operates
the landfill as an enterprise
fund which means this is a
stand alone business with
revenue and expense using
no tax money.
“It is an opposite compar
ison to Social Security. In
this day and time people
paying Social Security may
not receive benefits from
Social Security. Whereas at
the landfill the tipping fees
are actually paying for the
post closure expenditures
for the next 30 years,' Stal
