in the spring. This event allowed
chamber leaders to network with edu
cation leaders on issues and update
them on chamber education projects.
M.H. Cheek Scholarship - The com
mittee administers this scholarship, which
is paid from interest earned on a corpus
donated by Earl Cheek. The $250 schol
arship is given annually to a Perry Middle
School English student on awards day.
The school selects the recipient.
Students of the Month - The Perry
High School and Westfield students of
the month were honored with plaques
and recognized along with their par
ents at our bimonthly “Good Morning
Perry" breakfasts.
Georgia Scholar Reception- The
Chamber cosponsored the Georgia
Scholar Reception with the Warner
Robins Chamber of Commerce in May.
The event honored the Houston
County students who received this
State designation.
New Teacher Luncheons - We
cosponsored a new teacher luncheon
for the Houston County School System
on August 3rd at Bonaire Middle
School. Over 100 new teachers were
honored and presented with informa
tion about the Perry area On August
17th, new teachers from the Westfield
System were honored at a luncheon at
Houston Lake Country Club

Technical Institute established the
Houston County Joint Certified Literate
Community Program. This program
and its board of directors will guide the
County in reducing its illiteracy rate
over the next ten years. Houston
County officially became a Certified
Literate Community in 1998.
Teacher of the Year - The Chamber
helped sponsor gifts and awards to
the nominees and winners of the
Houston County Teacher of the Year.
Board of Directors - The Houston
County Board of Education
Superintendent and the Westfield
Headmaster are ex-officio members of
the Chamber of Commerce Board of
Directors. They present updates on
education issues at these meetings.
Education Sponsors - The committee
raised over $3500 this year in corporate
sponsorships to help fund education
projects and establish the new Youth
Leadership Perry program. None of this
would have been possible without the
help of our 1999 Education Sponsors.

Military Affairs

Purpose: Provide support to Warner
Robins Air Force Base to keep it viable
as the economic engine that drives mid
dle Georgia. This committee is not fund
ed by the general fund, but by the thirty
individuals that serve on the committee
1999 Projects:
Committee Member Recruitment - The
Middle Georgia Military Affairs Committee,
under the direction of the Warner Robins
Air Force Base Public Affairs Office
assigns the Perry Military Affairs
Committee membership slots. We current
ly have 30 committee positions. Additional
slots may be added with approval of the
WRAFB/PA The number of slots also
determines our pro rata share of expenses
incurred by the Middle Georgia Military
Committee.
Museum of Aviation Pledge -
Members of the Perry Military Affairs
Committee must commit to the
Heritage of Eagles Campaign at the
Museum of Aviation. Each member
donates SIOOO, payable in S2OO
installments over a five-year period.
Besides these contributions, the com
mittee donates an additional SIOOO
each year to the Museum. This is pre
sented to the commanding general
during an annual dinner at the

Middle Georgia Military Affairs
Committee - MGMAC consists of the
counties in the middle Georgia area
that WRAFB impacts, and which are
committed to keeping it as the eco
nomic engine that drives our area.
The Perry Area Chamber of
Commerce’s Chairman, President,
and MAC Chairman serve on the
executive board of this committee
The committee meets once per quar
ter to discuss issues affecting the
base and provide community support
for base functions. The committee
gives the base and outlet to keep the
community informed.
Military Ball - Members of the Perry
MAC committee are required to pur
chase two tickets to the Middle Georgia
Military Ball. The annual event is one of
two major fund raisers for the Museum
of Aviation, which is a major tourist
attraction in Houston County.
Georgia Invitational Golf
Tournament- This annual event is a
fund raiser for the Museum of Aviation.
Chamber leaders participate in this
event which is chaired by Senator Sam
Nunn and General Robert Scott (ret).
Buzzard's Roost - The committee
hosts a dinner each year for the
Warner Robins AFB/ALC Commander
and his senior staff This gives local
leaders networking opportunities with
