Commissioners approve new subdivision
By Charlotte Perkins

The Houston County
Commissioners held their first
meeting of 2003 on Tuesday
morning, and began by electing
Commissioner Larry Thomson to
serve as vice-chairman for the
year, and welcoming back
Commissioner Jay Walker, a veter
an of the county com
mission who resigned
in late 2001 to run for
state Senate, and was
re-elected in
November.
Commissioners
also reappointed Zell
Blackmon of Warner
Robins to. the Houston
County Hospital
Authority. This will be
Blackmon’s second
four-year term.
They approved a
request from Orchard
Partners of Perry to
rezone approximately
19 acres of farmland
along Kings Chapel
Road outside of Perry
from agricultural to
residential use.
According to Perry
Realtor and developer
Lynward Barrett, who
spoke on behalf of
Orchard Partners, 35
to 40 brick homes will
be built on the land.
Barrett said that the homes
would be from 1,400 to 1,600
square feet and in the $105,000-
$120,000 price range.
The commissioners were joined
by Mayor Jim Worrall and other
Perry officials for a presentation
on government regulations
regarding traffic planning and air
quality.
According to Jesse Fountain,
Warner Robins Community
Development Director and coordi
nator of the Warner Robins Area
Transportation Study (WRATS),
the planning boundaries of
WRATS have changed in accor
dance with the 2000 census. Due
to population growth in the area,
Byron will be included in the
WRATS planning area, and Perry
has the option of joining the plan
ning group.
Fountain said the metropolitan
area around Warner Robins was

expects that Perry will be part of
the designated planning area
within ten years.
He also said that he expected
that the Warner Robins area

Commission Chairman Ned
Sanders announced that the next
meeting of the County
Commission wil be held in
Hayneville at the fellowship hall of
the First Baptist Church. The
meeting will begin at 6 p.m. with a
public hearing on the subject of a
petition sent to the state
Department of Transportation by
Rep. Larry Walker. The petition
asks that the spelling of the unin
corporated community’s name on
state signage be changed from
“Hayneville” to “Haynesville.”

County Attorney Mike Law said
at the meeting that he had been
researching the issue, and could
find no law allowing the commis

Chairman Sanders jokingly said
that it might be necessary to
“write some law.”

Puppies snuggle on blanket after rescue on 1-75
By Judy Hall
Staff Writer
Two lucky puppies were rescued from
Interstate 75 recently. Unfortunately, one of their
siblings was not as lucky.
Joe and Debbie Snelgrove of Elko came upon
the tiny pups on the Interstate, picked them up
and took them home. They even took home the
one who didn’t make it and buried it.
According to Debbie, the little male puppy was
hugging one of the orange cones in the road “for
dear life” and yelped and yelped when she picked

it up. In the truck with the Snelgroves, the timid
little guy buried himself behind Debbie trying to
hide from the world.
Fed and snuggled down in a warm bed in the
Snelgrove’s basement, the pups were pho
tographed and the photos e-mailed to Joe’s
cousin Laura Loewen, another animal lover.
Now, the Snelgroves are looking for a home for
the pups. One is male and one is female, and both
are black and white of mixed breed.
Anyone wishing to adopt one or both of the
puppies can reach Loewen at (478) 988-0329.
