Kenseth makes a rare slip in points
Who would have
believed it? Matt
Kenseth actually
looked vulnerable. The cur
rent points leader suffered his
worst finish of the year, 33rd,
this past weekend and subse
quently lost just the slightest
bit of ground.
As the teams head to
Kansas,

Thrashers players injured
The Associated Press
ATLANTA Atlanta
Thrashers star Dany Heatley
was charged with driving
recklessly when he veered off
a road and slammed his
sportscar into a wall at about
80 mph, leaving him with a
broken jaw and teammate
Dan Snyder critically injured.
The Thrashers said Snyder,
a passenger in the car, had
surgery early Tuesday at
Grady Memorial Hospital lor
a depressed fracture in his
skull. Heatley broke his left
jaw and was in stable condi
tion, the team said.
Atlanta police spokesman
Sgt. John Quigley said
Heatley was driving his
Ferrari shortly before 11 p.m.
Monday night when the car
left the road and struck a wall
in front of an apartment com
plex.
The vehicle broke in half,
Quigley said. Heatley also was

Tony Stewart announced late
Monday he has filed a lawsuit
against Gary McColgin, a 45-
year-old Florida native, accus
ing him of selling fake racing
helmets and other non
licensed memorabilia featur
ing Stewart and his Winston
Cup sponsor The Home
Depot.
The lawsuit added to an
already long list of charges
against McColgin. In June at
his home in Woodstock,
McColgin was arrested by
Detective Burt Love of the
Cherokee County Sheriffs
Office for selling fake Rolex
watches on e-bay. Specific
charges against McColgin
include theft and counterfeit
ing, among others.
'We've been trying to track
this guy down for a while
now," said Stewart. "It looks
like fake racing helmets
vehicle because a passenger
was injured. Police told The
Atlanta Journal-Constitution
that the car hit a wall at about
80 mph, and that Snyder was
ejected from the vehicle.
Snyder, a center who scored
10 goals and added four
assists in 36 games for Atlanta
last season, had surgery on his
ankle earlier this month
before the start of training
camp. He was expected to
start the season on the injured
list.
The 25-year-old player
signed with the Thrashers as
a free agent in 1999 after play
ing four seasons of junior
hockey for Owen Sound in the
Ontario Hockey League.
The 22-year-old Heatley, the
NHL rookie of the year in
2001-02, led Atlanta in scor
ing last season with a team
record 41 goals and 48 assists,
and is the Thrashers' career
scoring leader with 155
points.

weren't the only things he was
selling. The fake Rolexes
were the first things to get
him in trouble, but my man
agement group has been gath

charged Mr. McColgin with
selling fake racing helmets.
"I want to be on the record
in saying that selling fake rac
ing merchandise of any kind
will not be tolerated by me or
anyone affiliated with Tony
Stewart Motorsports.
“It's deceptive, and it hurts
race fans and teams alike
race fans because they're not
getting authentic merchan
dise for which they paid, and
teams who are unable to
secure the royalties from rac
ing merchandise so they can’t
re-invest that money back
into the race team.”
RACE GONE WIRELESS:
The fastest thing at Kansas
this weekend may not be the
cars.
Flash Network announced
Monday they have teamed up
with personnel at the track to
bring suite guests, teams,
campground users and the
media high-speed Internet
access while at the track.
Antennas have been strate
gically placed around the
speedway that will allow sig
nals from the Internet cards
plugged into laptop computers
to be picked up and connected
to the Internet without use of
a phone line.
SEEING DOUBLE NO
PUN INTENDED: Ladies. If
your man seems overly anx
ious to see the race this week
end, it may not be because of
the racing. It may be because
the Coors Light Twins, Diane
and Elaine Klimaszewski, will
sing the national anthem
prior to the start of the race.
They will also be featured in
a special paint scheme on
Sterling Marlin’s Dodge dur
ing the race.
And, if that wasn’t enough,
the two 26-year-olds will also
appear in the Miramax fea
ture, “Scary Movie 3.” Now
that’s just plain horror-ble.
THAT SAM I AM:
Motorsports artist and design
er Sam Bass will be adding his
own special touch to the
NASCAR Winston Cup Series
'Victory Lap" tribute program
to honor departing sponsor
R.J. Reynolds and its 33-year
influence on stock car racing.
Known for his artistic por
trayal of NASCAR's greatest
drivers, he is creating individ
ual commemorative-framed
artist's renderings that will be

"Sam is not only an impor

Mark Dyer, vice president of

ROUND, SURROUND:
NASCAR announced late last
week that the thrill of
NASCAR will be captured via
IMAX 3D technology, and
also, that Kiefer Sutherland
will provide the narration for
the production.
"With The IMAX
Experience putting you in the
driver's seat at a series of
exciting NASCAR races," said
Sutherland, star of numerous
films and currently the main
character in the FOX drama
“24”, "you can virtually feel
the speed of the cars and the
thunder of the engines, and
that's why this film lends itself
perfectly to the technology
that IMAX provides."
NOT JUST PRIMER: Home
Depot, the world's largest
home improvement retailer,
announced Friday it has
extended its contract with Joe
Gibbs Racing through 2009 as
primary sponsor of the No. 20
Home Depot Chevrolet driven
by reigning NASCAR Winston
Cup Series champion Tony
Stewart.
"The growth and success of
our race team wouldn't have
been possible without the sup
port of The Home Depot," said
Gibbs, who formed his race
team more than 11 years ago.
The extension parallels
Stewart's new contract with
JGR.

this year’s Cubs? Even if
you’re a Braves fan! The
Cubbies have overcome
enormous amounts of adver
sity this season.
They lost their rising star
center fielder Corey
Patterson to a blown out
knee, almost watched their
phenom first baseman Hee
Seop Choi die on the field,
learned how to respond to a
new manager and encoun
tered many a trade in the
middle of the season.
Still, the chemistry stayed
intact, perhaps even because
of the various misfortunes.
So that brings us to the
Cubs versus the Braves. My
grand sweeping broad- brush
prediction is that the Ted
will sell out and it will be
quite possibly the most
watched National League
Division Series in history.
The Cubs have done
things the right way this
year. In 1998 they ran out of
gas toward the end of the
year and faltered against a
very different Braves team.
This year, the Cubs remind
me of Braves teams of old.
Dominating pitching and
great defense characterize a
team that’s won games this
year by getting just enough
runs.
Kerry Wood reminds me a
lot of John Smoltz when he
was a starter. Both are fierce
and focused competitors
with pinpoint accuracy and
overpowering stuff.
Then we have 22-year-old
Mark Prior. He does lack
playoff experience, but he

an infinitesimal ERA
And for the Cubs, every
game since mid-July has
been a must-win ... and they
did win most of them.
Last of the projected
starters, Carlos Zambrano, is
also 22 years old but has a
stifling fastball and even bet
ter sinker. The Cubs are at
an advantage because they
can keep Smoltz, the Braves
best pitcher, out of the series
altogether.
Sure the Braves offense is
good, but it is impatient and
inconsistent most of the
time, especially in the latter
half of the year. The Braves
are like the 1998 Cubs, com
pleting the role swap. They
didn’t play well coming into
the playoffs and are in dan
ger of getting swept.
I am not going to predict a
Cubs sweep (mostly because
I write this on Monday and it
comes out after the NLDS
has begun).
But I will tell you this: I
will be visiting my family as
often as possible now.

you like. I call myself Cubs
