What's the best way to copy a disk?
Dear TechnoFiles:
What is the best way to
copy a disk? I want to
copy the whole thing,
and I’d like it to be fast
and easy. Thanks! -Terry
H. in Centerville
Dear Terry:
You didn’t mention what
kind of computer or operat
ing system or what kind of
disk you are running, so I’ll
assume that you have a
Windows computer, and you
are trying to copy unprotect
ed, non-copyrighted CDs
that simply have data you
need on them. With those
assumptions in place, you
have two mqjor commercial
programs available that can
copy disks (and do a whole
lot more of course): Nero by
Ahead * software
(www.nero.com) $69.99, and
Easy CD Creator 6 by Roxio
$79.99 (www.roxio.com).
Both of these programs
will copy a disk, and are
pretty easy to use and fast. I
used to be a big fan of Easy
CD Creator but the program
has become a bit problemat
ic, buggy, and huge. The last
straw for me was when they
came out with an update
that was almost 100
megabytes in size! I then
switched to Nero and I’ve
been very happy. Nero Ultra
6 has a lot of bells and whis
tles that you might not
need, but it will also copy
What are assistive listening devices? Who should use them?
Assistive listening devices
are any pieces of equipment
that will help an individual
hear in challenging listening
situations, alert you to envi
ronmental events or
improve your capability to
cope when conversation is
critical. These devices can
be used anywhere: home,
work, theaters, church,
meetings and traveling in
the car.
Assistive devices can be
put into several categories:
alerting devices; telephone
aids; alternative listening
systems; and TV or film
access.
The alerting devices make
you aware of the presence of
an alerting signal such as
the doorbell, ringing phone,
alarm clock, paging device
or a baby’s cry. Smoke sig
nalers usually have a very
loud sound with a strobe
type visual signal. The door
bell or phone ringer can be
attached to a light that
flashes depending on the
source - two flashes for the

this machine? I don’t
really want to buy a new’
computer. - Legacy
Hardware
Dear Legacy:
Unfortunately, the easiest
way to upgrade to Windows
XP is to buy a new computer
with Windows XP already
installed. Since you indicat
ed that you don’t want to
take that path, let’s see
what other options are open
to you.
First, you need to make
sure your computer will
have at least the minimum
requirements for Windows
XP Your processor should be
fine - Windows XP requires
a minimum of u 233 MHz
Pentium 11, although it will
run very slowly and give you
plenty of time to ponder the
meaning of life as it chugs
hearing aid as long as the
hearing aid has a telecoil
built into the hearing aid.
Also available are portable
telephone amplifiers that fit
over the receiver. Those who
cannot understand an
acoustic signul can use the
TDD machine that converts
a typed in signal to a visual
signal on the other end If
the person with a hearing
loss has a TDD, but the
other party does not,
Georgia, as all states, pro
vides a relay service. Many
people with hearing loss use
fax machines and e-mail to
carry on distant conversa
tions.
Alternative listening sys
tems such as FM (frequency
modulated' systems attach
directly to a behind-the-ear
instrument. These use a
mobile wireless microphone
that picks up the speaker’s
voice and transmits the
voice signal directly to the
hearing instruments
through an FM signal. This
marches, and received phys
ical training, rifle marks
manship, field training exer
cises, and special training in
human relations.
In addition, airmen who
complete basic training earn
credits toward an associate
degree through the
Community College of the
Air Force.

Mack of Waldorf, Md., and

along. You’ll also need a
minimum of 128 MB of RAM
and about 2GB of free hard
disk space. Mind you, these
are just minimums - more is
always better when it comes
to exceeding the minimum
hardware requirements.
Since you are using
Windows 98, you’re fortu
nate that Windows XP has
an upgrade available. If you
(or anyone else) are using
Windows 95 or the server
editions of Windows 2000 or
Windows NT, then you will
have to perform a clean
install, which means wiping
your hard drive, installing
Windows XR and then rein
stalling all your applications
and data.
There’s a great Web site at
find.pcworld.com/37784 that
has a Windows XP
Readiness Test. It will auto
matically evaluate your
hardware, including your
CPU, memory, BIOS, hard
drive and graphics capabili
ties. Good luck!

improve the voice to back

ings, at school, at work, and
in the car. They transmit

Understanding dialogues
on the TV or in the theatre
is often a challenge for peo

Infrared systems work very
well for hearing at a dis
tance. If you have an
infrared system for your

system, you can bring your

hear almost the way you
remember you once did.
