to figure out if it’s viable.”
The excursion train could
run along tracks that paral
lel U.S. 341 North, which
connects the two cities. The
track itself is leased by the
Heart of Georgia Railroad in
Americus. The railroad’s
president and CEO, Brad
Lafevers, told the group that
the rail line itself, which is
used for freight, will have to
be upgraded for passenger
use.
“It’s not just a safety
issue, Lafevers said. “We’re
also talking about comfort
level. If people are going to
spill their Cokes on their lap
every few minutes, it’s not
going to be a good ride.”
Upgrading the track is
estimated to cost at least
$1.3 million. Officials would
also have to refurbish a
freight depot in Fort Valley,
buy a number of passenger
cars, and build a new plat
form in Perry, others.
But the group hopes to pay
for the project entirely

PERRY - The Georgia
Supreme Court has sus
pended Warner Robins
lawyer Spurgeon Green 111
from the practice of law in
Georgia for 90 days. .
According to the decision,
the court found that Green
had previously been sus
pended in Illinois in an
action that “arose out of
Green’s neglect of a client
matter in Illinois between
1995 and 1998 and Green’s
false denial of liability for
the $160,000 Illinois default
through state and federal
grants.
“We don’t actually have
the bricks-and-mortar
money ourselves, but we are
connected to the agencies
that do,” said Bruce Green,
a tourism product develop
ment manager for the
Georgia Department of
Economic Development.
“But this project, we’re here
to help with marketing.
“Really in any way we
can.”
Alien-Smith Consulting,
based in Jersey, Ga., is work
ing to help local officials find
a number of state and local
grants to pay for the project.
Debra Smith, a consultant
with the company, told the
group that a variety of
grants are available through
agencies including the
Department of Natural
Resources, the USDA, the
Department of
Transportation and through
community development
grants.

they are repeating or cours

not take classes simply to
get ahead.
Mattingly said
Superintendent Danny
Carpenter would like for
Houston students to be able
to take Georgia Virtual High
School courses before and
after their classes in school
during zero and seventh
periods.
Students will have to pay
S3OO for a one half-credit
course, which equals to one
semester’s work and S6OO
for a full-credit course,
which equals to a full year’s
work.
For this there will be a
need for a facilitator to over
see students.
“The impact will not be
known until the course of a
couple of years, because
there aren’t enough seats
available now,” Mattingly
said.
Mattingly said he hopes in
the future this program will
help students take advan
tage of Advanced Placement
courses that may not be
available at smaller high
schools such as Perry High.
He hopes it will also be
available to students at
Houston County Crossroads
Center, the county’s alterna-

tice that the client later
obtained against Green.”

by the State Bar. He could

offices had been disconnect

They also hope that the rail
way could draw visitors
from the fairgrounds to the
downtown area, allowing
tourists to visit shops and
restaurants and see
improvements on Big Indian
Creek.
Officials are still trying to
get the excursion train proj
ect going. The group is wait
ing to see how much a feasi
bility study will cost before
they bring the project to any
other state or local officials,
Initial estimates reveal that
a feasibility study could cost
between $30,000 and
$40,000. Collins said he is
working with Georgia Tech
and other agencies to get a
set estimate on the cost of
the study. He said that the
group will work to secure a
grant from the One Georgia
Authority to pay for the
study, but the cost could end
up being divided among the
various counties and states
involved. The One Georgia
Authority uses tobacco set
tlement money to help eco
nomically challenged com
munities.
