Suspect led authorities on lengthy pursuit
By RAY LIGHTNER
HHJ Staff Writer
A man nabbed Tuesday
after fleeing from police
twice in two days was
known to law enforcement-
According to the Georgia
Department of Corrections,
Richard Shane Harrell, 28,
RR3 Box 245, Hawkinsville,
served time on separate
charges of possession of nar
cotics (opiates) from Pulaski
County in May 2003 and
April 2001 from Bleckley
County. He also served time
for entering an auto - one
charge each also from
Bleckley and Pulaski coun
ties in 2001 - obstruction of
a law enforcement officer
from Bleckley County in
2001, and terroristic threats
and acts in 1997. He was
released from the Coffee
Correctional facility in July
2004 and most recently
bonded out of the Houston
County Detention Center on
May 3 of this year.
On Monday, deputies were
dispatched to East Flournoy
Road regarding an unwant
ed person. The complainant,
who had left the house,
reported her ex-boyfriend
had forced his way into the
residence. The deputies
reportedly noticed the door
was open, and wood from
the door frame on the lawn.
They announced them
selves, got no response, and
then entered the residence.
Harrell was reportedly
found hiding in a bedroom
closet and was handcuffed
and escorted outside. A
check of him reportedly
turned up three open war
rants, two from Houston
County and one from
Pulaski, including one for
possession of a firearm by a
convicted felon.
Harrell was searched
again before he was to be
placed in the patrol car, but
he reportedly broke loose
and ran. Deputies gave
chase as Harrell reportedly
ran through a cornfield and
attempted to hide in the
brush in the woods.
The deputies split up at
the treeline to try and locate
Harrell. He reportedly shed
his blue jeans and had the
handcuffs in front of him.
Warner Robins Police dogs
and the Georgia State Patrol
helicopter were among addi
tional units who arrived to
assist in the search.
Warrants were issued
against Harrell for obstruc
tion and escape as well as

On Tuesday, deputies
were notified about 12:42
p.m. of a pursuit involving
an officer with the
Hawkinsville Police
Department last seen in the
field behind Capital City
Turf at 660 Pitts Road.
The Hawkinsville Police
chief was reportedly at the
scene of the collision with
his Ford F-150 and a stolen
red Mitsubishi Mirage. The
chief reportedly said they
were traveling east through
the field back towards Pitts
Road when the offender’s
vehicle struck a ditch. After
the vehicle struck the ditch,
the impact altered the
course of the vehicle and put
it in the path of his truck.
He was unable to avoid a
collision and reportedly
struck the rear of the vehi
cle with the front bumper of
his truck, spinning the
offender’s vehicle 180
degrees in the field and
where it came to rest facing
west.
Harrell, who was allegedly
driving the Mirage, report
edly fled into the woods just
south of the incident loca
tion but was found about six
hours later by other officers
on scene. He was said to be
lying in a swampy area, try
ing to avoid detection from
the heat sensors in the heli
copter, according to Houston
County Sheriff s Capt. Alan
Everidge.
The Georgia State Patrol
helicopter and tracking dogs
were again used in the
search. Harrell’s charges
include theft by taking,
theft by receiving, posses
sion of a firearm by a con
victed felon, criminal tres
pass and escape.
