Opening day for the third
season of the Perry
Farmer’s Market was a little
wet. Chip McCurdy, who
manages the Market for us,
assured me that he had spo
ken with the Big Man and
that it was not going to rain
until after Noon. Chip
apparently misunderstood.
Boy, did we get wet! I had so
much water in my shoes
(oops, another shoe shop
ping opportunity) that I had
little waves around my
ankles every time I took a
step. All of our vendors
were troopers, though.
They were determined to
stick it out, and they did.
Jimmy Fincher cracked
me up. In what was a tor
rential downpour, he
strolled up to buy fresh veg
gies. So did T.J. Bridges,
sans shoes. She’s a lot
smarter that I am. But we
had fun while it lasted. I
went home for a hot bath
and a long nap. What a
great way to spend a rainy
Saturday!
This year’s new look for
the Farmer’s Market was
made possible by a donation
from Larry Walker Jr. and
the creative genius of the
City of Perry’s Maintenance
Supervisor Bob Taylor.
There is an unseen middle
man in all of this though.
Jim Moody, the City’s
Purchasing Agent for the
last seventeen years, came
up with the idea of creating
the tables from pallet racks
and secured the materials
for us. Mr. Moody has been
instrumental in making
many, many projects possi
ble for the City of Perry.
He’s the one I run to when
I’m stumped! Jim is always
on the lookout for things we
need and more often than
not gets them at a substan
tially reduced cost.
I had to laugh at Larry
Walker’s column last week.
He wrote about not having
anything to write about. I
have a hard time, too, com
ing up with material every
week. Sometimes it’s very
easy, but often it’s a stretch.
But, Mr. Walker, I’ve fol
lowed your example here
and come up with another
paragraph! (The man’s a
genius!)
On the goldfish front, I
have found a surprising
remedy for many goldfish
ills. Tea tree oil! Yes, you
dump a little in the water
and they love it!
Surprisingly, it also makes
the kitchen smell good.
In my research, I’ve found
that tea tree oil has a
remarkable number of uses,
from treating insect bites
and stings, acne, fungal
infections, to treating dan
druff and head lice. Studies
have shown that tea tree oil
has broad-spectrum anti
bacterial, anti-fungal and
antiviral activity. Tea tree
oil is even found in tooth
paste. However, it is toxic,
so don’t ingest it. I also read
that it’s toxic to cats. I
guess no cats will be fishing
in my aquariums!
Educators, beware! After
taking the CRCT this year,
my daughter has
“smartened up”. While vis
iting her grandmother last
week, Adrienne was helping
dig fencepost holes. Mom
just had surgery on both
arms and enlisted
Adrienne’s help in erecting
a new fence. After a long,
hot day of digging, they
were surveying the work
and Mom noted that the
fence line seemed a little
crooked. Adrienne informed
Mom that it was just an
obtuse angle.
I had to go to Mayor
Worrall for a refresher
course on angles. Now I
know all about right angles,
obtuse angles and acute
angles. The things we have
to do to stay ahead of our
children!

Boys come in all shapes, sizes and temperaments
QUESTION: We have a
9-year-old boy who is
quiet, careful, thoughtful
and very, very shy. Does
that mean he is not “all
boy”? Should we be try
ing to change him, to
make him more assertive
and aggressive?
DR. DOBSON: The won
derful thing about the way
human beings are designed is
their marvelous variability
and complexity. We are all dif
ferent and unique. My previ
ous discussions of aggressive,
risk-taking boys represent an
effort to characterize young
males, showing what is typi
cal and how they are differ
ent from their sisters.
However, they also differ
from one another on a thou
sand traits.

Eternal refers to the
endless past, the unending
future, or to God’s present
experience of all time.
God has no beginning as
man can understand
beginning and no ending
either, but God exists now
and knows both the begin
ning and the end as we per
ceive them.
This also points to how
much we can trust God.
Since He created time as
we know it, He lives out
side of time and can see the
beginning and the end of
our lives and the age of
men and the church.
Therefore when He tells us
what events will precede
and be a part of the end of
the age, we can rest
assured that those events
will happen just as He
described. More than that
though, we can live with
the peace of knowing that
when we die we will be
with Him forever without
end.

Your son is certainly not

persistent throughout child
hood and beyond. They may
be very spontaneous or funny
when they are comfortable at
home. When they are with
strangers, however, their
tongues are thrust into their
cheeks and they don’t know
what to say. Some kids are
like this because they have
been hurt or rejected in the
past. The more likely expla
nation is that they were bom
that way. Some parents are
embarrassed by the introver
sion of their children and try
to change them. It is a fool’s
errand. No amount of goad
ing or pushing by their par
ents will make them outgo
ing, flamboyant and confi
dent.
My advice to you is to go
with the flow. Accept your
child just the way he is made.
Standing side by side
In days gone by, much
emphasis was placed on the
woman who stood behind the
successful man. As a rule, the
woman was the loyal wife who
supported her husband in his
efforts.
As times changes, emphasis
changed. Less was said about
the one in the background as
talk focused on the fight for
equality. It is comforting to
know there remained some
who, out of love and respect,
provided strength to his or
her companion. The husband
and wife who are blessed with
a family which might be con
sidered large in number
reflects the true meaning of
“equality” in their role as par
ents.
The wife and mother
remained considerate of her
husband, not permitting out
side activities to crowd him
out. Despite their busy sched
ules, the wife made time to
use a specific talent in
Christian service. The hus
band also designated a por
tion of time to Christian
involvements outside the
home.
Neither of the parents ever
gained recognition ad “The
Most Successful” man or
woman, but evidence of suc
cess is visible in each individ
ual life. He was successful as a
husband and father and also
his occupation - She was suc
cessful in the home as wife
and mother.

qualities that give your boy
individuality and potential.
Nurture him. Cultivate him.
And then give him time to
develop into his own unique
personality like no other

The success of this couple
was not attained from one
standing behind the other, but
from the two standing side by

The secret of success for

concludes with this advice:
“Let every one of you in par

himself; and the wife see that
she reverence her husband.”
