Hornets and Panthers took
advantage with a junior var
sity and varsity doublehead
er Tuesday at Perry.
The two teams are play
ing a home and home series,
with Perry traveling to
Westfield Monday for a JV
game at 6 p.m. and a varsity
game at 8 p.m.
Perry, Westfield, Northside,
Warner Robins and Houston
County also played in Perry’s
Crossroads baseball tourna
ment last week.
Although the rain played
around with the schedule,
the Panthers and Hornets
did get three games in,
each.
“We did well considering
the weather we were hav
ing,” Masters said.
His Panthers did well on
the field, too. They won two
of their three games. And,
Masters was also pleased
with the play of couple of
players.
“We found out that Ryan
Lee can pitch,” he said, “and
Stephen Calhoun can play
left field.”
Perry wasn’t the only team
to see some of its talent step
up.
“We’re starting two fresh
men,” Smith said. “Jarred
Taylor and John Thomas
Rust have been doing good
jobs.”
He also said that Andrew
Arnold would be returning
from a one-year hiatus.
“He didn’t play last year,”
Smith said, “but he (plans)
to play this year. He can play

A 13-under team already
exists, but Thomas said the
league has a unique way of
qualifying players for the
team.
To qualify, players have to
meet three criteria besides
being good ballplayers.
Thomas said they have to
have a passing grade point
average at their middle
school.
“Brian Thrasher and
Connor Thomas (of Byron
Middle School and Warner
Robins Middle School,
respectively) had the high
est GPA for athletes at
their school,” Thomas said.
“They were awarded scho
lastic academic awards and
a number of other players
made the honor rolls at their
schools.”
The players also have to
agree to volunteer once a
month to work on the WRNL
fields and, they have to work

various outfield positions.”
Smith added that the
Hornets - keeping in mind
it’s about nine months before
baseball that “counts” starts
again - could look forward
to good things from trans
fer student Tyler Brooks, a
sophomore from Houston
County.
The Hornets went unde
feated in the Crossroads
with the T-ball players.
Thomas said that switch
ing to USSSA two years ago
influenced part of what’s
happening at WRNL today.
“By going to USSSA, we
actually picked up travel
teams,” he said. “They play
as part of the league. We
hope to build a talent base
here.”
The league’s goal, he said,
is to build through the 13-
under travel team and 12-
under All-Stars.
Warner Robins National
League is hosting an All-
Star 12-under and travel
teams tournament Friday
and Saturday.
