The father's heirs
Of the many blessings
God has bestowed upon me,
a very special one is cher
ished memories of a loving
father.
Daddy’s job on the rail
road kept him away from
home during the week, but
while he was away our fam
ily had the security of
knowing our needs would
be provided.
We had the security of
knowing God would be near
to protect us from harm.
This lesson in faith was
reflected through the teach
ings of our parents.
During the short week
ends, we were more aware
of our father’s love because
of the presence of God.
We were not wealthy so
far as finances are con
cerned, but what we had
could never be purchased
for any amount of money.
My father left an inheri
tance to his heirs which I
shall strive to be deserving
of, as was my father, and
pray that those whom I
influence along the way
shall also reap the benefits
of the inheritance passed on
by my father.
“God has chosen those
who are poor in the world to
be rich in faith and heirs of
the kingdom which He has
promised those who love
him.” - James 2:5 (1979)

Teaching children to read is our schools' no. 1 priority
QUESTION: Schools
are asked to accomplish
many things on behalf of
our kids today. What
part of the curriculum
would you give the
greatest priority?
DR. DOBSON: Schools
that try to do everything
may wind up doing very lit
tle. That’s why I believe we
should give priority to the
academic fundamentals
what used to be called
“readin’, writin’, and ‘rith
metic.” Of those three, the
most important is basic lit
eracy. An appalling number
of students graduating from
high school can’t even read
the employment page of the
newspaper or comprehend
an elementary book. Every
one of those young men and
women will suffer years of
pain and embarrassment
because of our failure. That
misery starts at a very
young age.
A lOth-grade boy was
once referred to me because
he was dropping out of
school. I asked why he was
quitting, and he said with
great passion: “I’ve been
miserable since first grade.
I’ve felt embarrassed and
stupid every year. I’ve had
The word “Christology”
comes from two Greek
words which combined
mean “the study of
Christ.”
Christology is the study
of the person and work of
Jesus Christ. There are
numerous questions that
Christology answers.
Who is Jesus Christ? Is
Jesus God? Did Jesus ever
claim to be God? How can
Jesus be both God and
man at the same time?
Why is the virgin birth
so important? What does
it mean that Jesus is the
Son of God?

Teaching children to read
should be “job one” for edu

girls that basic skill is the
foundation on which other
learning is built.
Unfortunately, millions of
young people are still func

pleting 12 years of schooling
and receiving high school
diplomas. There is no

excuse for this failure.
Research shows that
every student, with very
few exceptions, can be
taught to read if the task is
approached creatively and
individually. Admittedly,
some can’t learn in group
settings because their
minds wander and they
don’t ask questions as read
ily. They require one-on-one
instruction from trained
reading specialists. It is
expensive for schools to
support these remedial
teachers, but no expendi
ture would be more helpful.
Special techniques, teach
ing machines and behavior
modification techniques can
work in individual cases.
Whatever is required, we
must provide it.
Furthermore, the sooner
this help can be given, the
better for the emotional and
academic well-being of the
child. By the fourth or fifth
grades, he or she has
already suffered the humili
ation of reading failure.

What is Christology?
Christ. The problem is
that they <fo not believe in
Jesus Christ presented in
the Bible. That is why
Christology is so impor
tant.
It helps us to under
stand why the deity of
Christ is so crucial.
It demonstrates why
Jesus is the atoning sacri
fice for our sins.
Christology teaches us
that Jesus had to be man
so that He could die- and
had to be God so that His
death would pay for our
sins.

an alternative for me to
pursue?
DR. DOBSON: You might
want to consider building a
home-based business that
can be done while taking
care of your children and
keeping your sanity. Among
the possibilities are cater
ing, desktop publishing, pet
grooming, sewing, consult
ing, transcribing legal docu
ments or even mail-order
sales.
Choosing which business
is right for you is the first of
three practical steps sug
gested by Donna Partow;
author of the book
“Homemade Business” ($6,
Focus on the Family
Publishing). You can start
your own enterprise by tak
ing a personal skills and
interests inventory to iden
tify your particular abilities
and what you might like
doing the best. The second
step is to do your home
work. Begin by asking your
librarian to help you
research your chosen field.
Check out books, magazines
and newspaper articles.

According to Mrs. Partow,
the third step is to marshal
as much support as you can.
Get your children, your
spouse and your friends on
your side. Setting up a
small business can be
stressful, and you’ll need as
much encouragement as
you can get. If you’ve been
torn between family and
finances, having a home
based business may turn
out to be the best of both
worlds.
