Method of determining sales tax on motor vehicle transactions
Special to the HHJ
ATLANTA - Effective
Friday, the amount of
Georgia sales tax collected
on transactions involving
the sale, lease, or rental of
motor vehicles by Georgia
residents for periods exceed
ing 30 days will be deter
mined by the state and local
tax rate of the county in
which the vehicle will be
registered.
Previously, the amount of
sales tax due was based on
the state and local tax rate
of the county where the pur
chaser took possession of
the vehicle.
“This change in the law
provides definitive guidance
to dealers regarding the
amount of sales tax they
should collect,” said Georgia

C'ville prepares to hike fees
By TERESA D. SOUTHERN
HHJ Staff Writer
Centerville citizens will
undoubtedly see an increase
in their fees for city services.
The city held the first
reading for an ordinance
that will raise city fees of
water and sanitation, during
a Tuesday night meeting.
Centerville Mayor Ronnie
Brand, said the increase of
rates for those outside the
city and those inside the city
have been balanced with
this price adjustment.
“It seems like a lot, but we
couldn’t provide that service
cheaper than any other
city,” he said.
In a past meeting, Brand
said there were several
choices to increase revenue
in the city, the choice was
made to increase city fees.
Sanitation fees will
increase to sls for sanita
tion for individuals, sll for
senior citizens and $25.50
for commercial customers.
Those with Dumpsters will
also see an increase in pick
up per week.
Water fees will increase to
about sll for residential
users using less than 2,000
gallons of water, and $2.17
per 1,000 gallons for cus
tomers exceeding the use of
2,000 gallons.
Commercial use will
increase to $30.67 for those
under 2,000 gallons, $3.58
per 1,000 gallons and $2.74
per 1,000 gallons for those
using over 30,000 gallons.
Also at the meeting, the
city approved the contract
for a fire truck purchased in
April.
The council voted to make
ten annual payments of
$21,000 for the truck, which
costs only $164,689. The
payment schedule will begin
in 2007 and end in 2016.
Fire Chief Larry Sharpless
said they have also had sev
eral open burning calls.
“People have called and
asked ‘Where do I get a per
mit to burn?’” he said.
“There is no permit to
bum.”
He also reported that the
Bart L. Graham. “It will also
reduce the instances when
our Rome Regional Office
has to go through the
unpleasant task of sending
notices to taxpayers inform
ing them that additional
sales tax is due on their
motor vehicle purchase.”
Such notices normally
occurred when the tax rate
for the dealership was less
than the tax rate in the pur
chaser’s county of residence.
The change will generate
income for counties that do
not have motor vehicle deal
erships located in their
county. Prior to the law
change, motor vehicle deal
erships were required to col
lect local county sales tax
based on the tax rate where
the dealership was located.
The exception was in those

instances when a vehicle
was delivered to the pur
chaser or he/she otherwise
took possession of the vehi
cle in their county of resi
dence, which had no dealer
ships. Under those circum
stances, the local sales tax
was distributed to the non
dealership county.
This legislative change
was contained in House Bill
22, which the Georgia legis
lature passed on April 4 and
Gov. Sonny Perdue signed
on May 6. The bill was spon
sored by Reps. Calvin Hill,
Chuck Scheid and Charlice
Byrd.
