Blood drive
today at Belk
Special to the HHJ •
The Atlanta Braves are
going to bat for people who
will need blood or platelet
transfusions after the holi
days by hosting the Atlanta
Braves American Red Cross
Blood Drive at area malls
and donor centers during
the Fourth of July weekend.
Red Cross officials are
urging Houston Countians
to donate at Belk Matthews
Galleria Mall, 2950 Watson
Blvd., Centerville, from 2-7
p.m. today.
Due to a critical summer
blood shortage the Red
Cross urgently needs donors
with all blood types. All
blood and platelet drive par
ticipants will receive an
American Red Cross T-shirt
and will be eligible to win
tickets to an upcoming
Atlanta Braves’ game,
signed memorabilia or the
grand prize: four tickets to
an upcoming Atlanta
Braves’ game with a field
visit. Most healthy people
age 17 or older, who weigh at
least 110 pounds, can
donate blood and platelets.

W
about the blood drive, please
call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE or log
on to www.givebloodred
cross.org. In addition, the
Atlanta Braves are offering
a Braves grand slam value
plan to everyone: four tick
ets, four hot dogs, four
cokes, parking and yearbook
starting at $59. Go to
www.atlantabraves.com or
call (800) 326-4000 for infor
mation.
The summer is especially
tough for the American Red
Cross since schools, which
account for about 20 percent
of donations, are out and
people are on vacation.
Unfortunately, the need for
blood and platelets does not
diminish just because fewer
people donate. In the
Southern Region of the
American Red Cross, blood
and platelets typically have
to be imported from other
areas of the country just to
meet the needs of hospital
patients. During the sum
mer months, it becomes
more difficult to import
blood from other states
because other areas of the
country are short as well.
