Group to hammer
out policies on
development,
housing, land use
By TIMOTHY GRAHAM
HHJ Staff Writer
The Houston County
Vision 2020 Committee
voted to establish a Houston
County Coordinated
Planning Committee in
Wednesday’s meeting.
The committee’s mission
would be to “provide to local
governmental planning
commissions and authori
ties suggested policies that
improve Houston County’s
economic development,
housing, community facili
ties and services, natural
and historical resources and
land use.”
The proposed committee
would have four members
each from Warner Robins
and Houston County, two
members from the city of
Perry, and one each from
Centerville, the Houston
County Board of Education,
and the Warner Robins Area
Transportation Study Policy
Board.
Perry City Manager Lee
Gilmour told the group that
it was important to have
representation from the
school board since “their
decisions on where to locate
schools helps to determine
land use.”

‘weary’ of Brand’s
conflicts of interest
By TERESA D. SOUTHERN

A 46-acre tract of land on
Dunbar Road was one of the
topics of discussion at a
Centerville City Council
work session Tuesday night.
Mayor Ronnie Brand
signed an affidavit saying he
had a conflict of interest
with the property being dis
cussed.
According to the affidavit,
while serving as a realty
agent he submitted an offer
on the behalf of a proposed
buyer for the property at
1128 Dunbar Road, which
was rejected.
If it had been accepted,
the affidavit states he would
have received $27,657.50 in
commission.
Another realty agent pro
posed an offer to purchase
the property and it was
accepted.

Optimists sponsor
classroom lessons
on economics,
entrepreneurship
By TERESA D. SOUTHERN
HHJ Staff Writer
During the school year,
Shawn Buchanan and other
members of the Warner
Robins Noon Optimist Club
have taken to spending their
afternoons at Pearl
Stephens Elementary
School, teaching students
about the economics of life.
Starting last school year,
each fourth-grade class at
Pearl Stephens is participat
ing in a Junior Achievement
module.
Junior Achievement is an
international program,
which uses “hands-on expe
riences to help young people
understand the economics
of life.”
In partnership with busi
ness and educators, the
Junior Achievement pro
gram brings real-world
experiences to students.
The students are studying
economics, entrepreneur
ship and commerce.
Problem-solving and real
world examples are part of
the curriculum. Imagine
your elementary schooler
learning about profit and
sales. The program is
described as bridge between
education and business.
Earlier this year, Peggy
Head’s fourth-grade class
talked with Buchanan about
natural resources, one of
their last lessons with him
before their final.
The students answered
questions and talked about
how businesses make profit
from offering goods and
services to consumers.
