Thomas Christian, a Houston Countian who represented Georgia at the National Youth

Thomas Christian, a 2005
graduate of Houston County
High School from Warner
Robins, was one of two dele
gates selected to represent
Georgia at the National
Youth Science Camp (NYSC)
this summer.
Christian joined 97 other
high school graduates from
across the country, as well as
ten international delegates,
to participate in the presti
gious three-week program,
now in its 42nd year. The
camp, located in the beauti
ful and rustic setting of the
Monongahela National
Forest in West Virginia,
integrates scientific pro
gramming with opportuni
ties for delegates to explore
music, art, and the outdoors.
“I have truly enjoyed the
opportunity thus far to meet
the best and brightest minds
of students my age interest
ed in science,” Christian
said. “The level of enthusi
asm represented by my
peers is truly amazing and
the chance to meet each and
every one of them is some
thing I will never forget.”
Christian is planning to
study earth sciences and
international relations at
Georgia Institute of
Technology this fall.
Each year, eminent scien
tists from various disciplines
travel to the camp to pres
ent lectures and directed
studies. This year’s lecture
topics included: renewable
energy, forensic science, new
innovations in surgical
instrumentation, structural
engineering, and’ cancer
research. The directed stud
ies provide extensive
“hands-on” experience in
specific fields. Delegates had
the opportunity to dissect a
human hand, build comput
ers, explore a nearby bog, or
plan a mission to Mars.
In addition to learning
about ground breaking sci
entific research, delegates
also explored their natural
surroundings through an
extensive outdoor program
consisting of hiking, caving,
mountain hiking, rock

ed to the rank of colonel in
the Tennessee Army
National Guard on Aug. 6.
Col. Moore presently
serves as the M-day
Comptroller for the state’s
Joint Forces Headquarters
in Nashville, Tenn.
Previously, he was the
commander of the 30th
Finance Battalion, which
was mobilized and deployed
in 2003 for Operation
Enduring Freedom.
