School bus hit
by truck; woman
hospitalized
By MIKE GEORGE
HHJ Staff Writer
One woman was hospitalized Tuesday afternoon after a
box truck hit the side of a school bus along Ga. 96.
According to Beth Burris, spokeswoman for the Houston
County Board of Education, more than three dozen
children from Perdue Elementary and Perdue Primary
School were on the bus at the time of the accident. Two
children complained of sore elbows at the scene, and
another complained of an ankle injury.
According to Trooper Justin Tabor with the Georgia
State Patrol Post in Perry, the accident happened some
time before 3:45 p.m. Tuesday near Galaxy Liquors and
roughly a mile east of the intersection of Ga. 96 and
Houston Lake Road.
According to Tabor, the bus was attempting to make an
“improper” U-tum at a break in the median when a box
truck from Bass Custom Landscapes, a Bonaire landscap
ing and irrigation company, ran into the back left corner
of the bus. The truck was heading eastbound at the time,
Tabor said.
According to Burris, the school bus driver, Leemon
“Gary” Brown, 67, was cited in the accident.
“The driver said he always turns around there,” Tabor
said.
But apparently the box truck driver didn’t see the bus
turning. Tabor said there were no signs of skid marks on
the roadway, a sign that the truck tried to brake before
