Local UGA students honored

Two University of Georgia
students from Perry were
honored last month for
their work at the Daniel B.
Warnell School of Forestry
and Natural Resources.
Graduate student Amanda
Hamsley was awarded the
Jerome L. Clutter Memorial
Fellowship at the . 75th
Annual Spring Awards
Banquet held at the UGA
Center for Continuing
Education Conference
Center and Hotel in Athens
April 20.
The fellowship honors
the memory of Dr. Jerome
Clutter, who served as the
Union Camp Professor of
Forestry in the Warnell
School from 1963-1983.
Dr. Clutter developed the
mathematical relationship
between growth and yield
and, along with several
other professors and grad
uate students, developed
the Maxmillion Harvest
Scheduling Program, which
became a standard in the
forest industry. This fellow
ship was established short
ly after Clutter’s death by
industry colleagues and is
supported by family, friends
and former graduate stu
dents. This award is pre
sented to an outstanding
graduate student who stud
ies or conducts research in
biometrics or timber man
agement.
“I would like to congratu
late Amanda for her tre
mendous dedication to her
education and all of her
efforts as a student leader
that help make the Warnell
School a great place to get
a degree and prepare for a
career,” said Warnell School
Dean Richard Porterfield.
“Amanda has proven her
ability to succeed in our
rigorous academic program
and we are certain she will
make a marked contribution
in whatever career path she
chooses for herself.”

Memorial Scholarship. The
scholarship was established
by the late Jack T. May,
a professor of silvicutlure
and forest soils for more
than 20 years, in memory
of his wife. The scholar
ship is provided annually
to an outstanding profes
sional or graduate student
who is actively involved in
extra-curricular activities,
both inside and outside the
school.

was one of twelve Warnell
School students recognized
at UGA’s Honors Day cel
ebration, and she was
inducted into Xi Sigma Pi,
the national forestry honors
society established in 1908.
With more than fifty fac
ulty and 23,000 acres of
teaching lands, the Warnell
School is the oldest of its
kind in the United States,
according to a press release
from the school.
