Former New York
mayor backs Reed
in Lt. Gov. race
ATLANTA (AP)
Former New York Mayor
Rudolph Giuliani is headlin
ing a fundraiser Thursday
for ex-Christian Coalition
leader Ralph Reed, who is
locked in a fierce battle for
Georgia’s lieutenant gover
nor seat.
The appearance is certain
to give Reed’s campaign a
boost in the run-up to the
July 18 Republican primary.
Reed’s campaign has been
dogged by his ties to dis
graced former lobbyist Jack
Abramoff, who is facing
prison time after pleading
guilty to charges of conspir
acy, tax evasion and fraud.
And it could provide
Giuliani, a potential 2008
presidential candidate, with
a jolt of support among
conservative Republicans.
Giuliani’s endorsement of
Reed comes weeks after
religious conservative icon
Rev. Jerry Falwell said he
admired the former mayor,
but could not support him
for president because of
“irreconcilable differences
on life and family.”
Giuliani supports abortion
rights, gay rights and gun
control.
Reed and Giuliani were
effusive in praise for one
another as they entered
the Atlanta fundraiser just
before noon, surrounded by
news media from Georgia
and New York.
“I just want to say I
believe Rudy Giuliani is one
of the finest leaders in not
only the Republican Party
but in either party,” Reed
said.

Giuliani responded,
“We’re here to get you elect
ed. It would be a great thing
for Georgia.”
Reed’s opponent in the
primary, state Sen. Casey
Cagle, has been far from shy
about challenging Reed’s
credentials. At campaign
stops, Cagle talks of his
elected experience while
reminding voters of Reed’s
connections with Abramoff.
Missing fund mgr.
arrested in Miami
ATLANTA (AP) A
hedge fund manager miss
ing since he was accused
of defrauding hundreds of
investors three months ago
was arrested at a Miami
Beach hotel Wednesday, FBI
officials said.
The Securities and
Exchange Commission
filed a federal lawsuit Feb.
27 against Kirk Wright
of Marietta, Ga., and his
company, International
Management Associates.
Wright faces five counts of
fraud. A civil complaint was
also filed in Georgia state
court on Feb. 17.
Among the clients that
Wright deceived, authori
ties said, are former Denver
Broncos Terrell Davis, Steve
Atwater, Rod Smith, Ray
Crockett, Blaine Bishop and
Al Smith, as well as for
mer longtime Philadelphia
Eagles player Clyde
Simmons.
Miami FBI field office
spokeswoman Judy Orihuela
said Wright is scheduled to
appear in U.S. Magistrate
Court there on Thursday.
He will be returned to
Atlanta to face federal
charges of mail fraud.
