yards within 3 inches of the cup on the
first playoff hole to beat Karrie Webb and
win the LPGA Championship.
Pak atoned for a three-putt bogey on

to beat Webb, who was trying to capture
the second leg of the Grand Slam.
Pak joined Mickey Wright, Kathy

PARIS (AP) - Rafael Nadal scram
bled across the sun-baked day for three
hours in 90-degree heat chasing another
French Open title by repeatedly fordng
Roger Federer to hit one more shot.
The effort by the 20-year-old Spaniard
paid off with a 1-6,6-1, 6-4, 7-6 (4) vic
tory Sunday, spoiling Federer’s bid for a
fourth consecutive Grand Slam champi
onship. He earned his second succes
sive Roland Garros title and extended
his record day-court winning streak to
60 matches. He also prevented the top
ranked Federer from becoming only the
third man to hold all four major titles at
the same time.
On Saturday, Justine Henin-Hardenne
won her fifth Grand Slam title and her
third at Roland Garros, beating Svetlana
Kuznetsova 6-4, 6-4. The Belgian
became the first woman to win consecu
tive titles since Steffi Graf in 1995-96, and
the first to win three French Open titles in
four years since Graf in 1993-96.

his genes were worth more
than a million dollars a pop,
if you’ll pardon the expres
sion.
Breeders will pay the value
of several oil wells to put
their mares with that stal

I’d have had a few kids for
that kind of money.
What astounded me more
was the vast number of well
wishers who sent get well
cards to the horse.
I’d give millions for a horse
that could read.
The notion that animals
can feel anything beyond
pain, lust and hunger is
beyond me. The outpour
ing of concern for the fate
of Barbaro must have made
the horse want to live.
Its pea brain probably
spent several seconds wish
ing it could thank all of his
well-wishers but then he had
to relieve himself.
With stamps costing 39
cents, and looking to go up to
42 cents in the near future, I
can’t see myself sending too
many cards.
People lined the route the
horse took to the veterinar
ian college in Pennsylvania
holding signs of support.

There were 14 cautions,
most of which were one- or
two-car spins, but the hard

99, when Ronnie Kittle,
Nick Potts, Alan Happel and
Mahlon Winstead all got

Potts impacted the inside

severely damaging his racer.
Kittle hit the outside retain

only driver able to continue.
Barbaro spent the trip
thinking its leg hurt.
I liked my cat, but I knew
that it would eat me if I

Why do human beings

The Grizzly Man thought

I believe that most things

Barbaro will spend several

he has already begun to

worth living for.
I’m amazed that folks from
PETA haven’t protested a
sport that injures horses.
But PETA has problems of
its own. A branch up north

PETA reps were killing

they had too many to sup

Maybe PETA is jealous. Its

has to tick them off.
