Demons close tourney with Z wins
By MATTHEW BROWN
HHJ Sports Writer
After Jacob Gore pitched a
two-hitter for Warner Robins
High School against Jones
County on Saturday, the
Demon Diamond Summer
Bash host team demolished
the Macon Mavericks 15-4
in five innings to conclude
its summer play on the
home field.
Shane Sams and Daniel
Molina combined to beat
the Mavericks on the pitch

two runs in the first, but
Griffin leads Bears past Laurens County

Stephen Griffin’s RBI single in the
fifth inning brought in Ryan Beitler
with the winning run Saturday of
Houston County High’s second
straight game in the Demon Diamond
Summer Bash at Warner Robins High
School.
The Bears defeated the Laurens
County Raiders

two outs. The Bears struggled all day
with runners in scoring position, but
Griffin’s hit put the team’s previous
failures to rest.
With the events of the first inning,
the Bears and Raiders looked to be on
their way to a scoring festival. Beitler
had an RBI single and Brandon Loy’s
sacrifice fly gave Houston County a
2-0 edge in the top of the first. The
Raiders answered with a three-run
home run in the bottom half by Jared
Leverette.
The Raiders had another runner on
bage with one out in the first when
Houston turned a rare type of double
play. Chris Thompson, after taking a
groundout throw at first base, relayed
the baseball to Tyler Gay at third base
to catch the Raider runner and end
the inning.
Laurens County took a 4-2 lead after
three innings. The Bears, though,
caught several two-out breaks in the
top of the fourth for three runs and a
5-4 lead.
With two outs and a runner on,
Gay’s pop-up dropped fair in the out
field.
The ensuing relay to third went into
the dugout to give Houston a run. J.C.
Payne singled to tie the score, and
after a walk and two hit batters the
Bears were back in front.
Kyle Davis pitched the first three
innings, then he gave way to Cameron

left two runners stranded
on second and third with no
outs in the second. Molina
finished the game out with
three strikeouts in three
innings, two runs and five
hits allowed.
Macon scored its two
first-inning runs after Britt
Sutton recorded consecutive
assists from third base.
The Mavericks followed
with two hits and a Warner
Robins error that saw both
runners hustle home. Two
more hits loaded the bases,
but Matt Butterick made a

the tying run in the bottom half on a
triple to the wall and a tough ground
ball chance between the shortstop and
third base with two outs.
After Griffin untied the game in
the top of the fifth, Tufts pitched a
scoreless fifth after giving up a leadoff
double to Leverette.

In the top of the second,
Macon had two more run

walk and error on a bunt.
But Butterick ran into
foul ground to make the
first of two catches in the
inning, and Sams closed
this frame out with his only
strikeout.
Sams made an impact
at the plate, driving in the
tying and go-ahead runs in
the bottom of the first.
The Demons also got a
leadoff triple from Nathan
Poole and an RBI ground
out from Alex Phant.
Warner Robins coach
Bill Beatty worked out his
team’s bunting abilities in
the second inning, and the
result was three more runs
for a 6-2 lead.
Mark Meagley executed
a sacrifice, and a double
from Colin Hops gave the
Demons runners on second
and third.
Butterick laid down

Eagles fall
again; Nats
down Angels
From staff reports
Three days after losing
out on their bid to knock the
Nationals from the top of
the Middle Georgia Baseball
League standings and take
over sole possession of first,
the Eagles took another step
back.
This time it was the
Cardinals . who bumped
off the Eagles, who head
ing into last week’s action
had a nine-game win streak
going, in Saturday action
at the Bibb County Sports
Complex.
No stats were reported
but the Cardinals obviously
had no trouble hitting Eagle
pitching, ultimately winning
22-10.
I n one other game Saturday
in Macon, the Angels, who
had won two straight, also
took a step back from rising
up out of the cellar.
The Red Sox beat them
10-6.
No Angels stats were
reported, but for the Red
Sox, 2-4 was apparently the
soup of the day.
Jeremy Waldrep, Chris
Dunn, Matt Nelson and
Keith Barker all ended their
day at the plate with that
mark. Waldrep, Dunn and
Barker also added two RBI
to their total, while each
also scored a run.
Nelson scored two runs
and knocked one in.
Lane Singleton was also
2-3 for the Red Sox and he
finished with two RBI and a
run scored.
Dunn worked two and
two-third innings for the
Red Sox and picked up the
win. He scattered five hits
and gave up two runs. He
also struck out three and
walked two.
Barker picked up the save
with two and a third innings
pitched. He fanned five.
Dumb athletes
should suffer
'Roeth' of fans
I think there is a direct
correlation between
money, athletics and
stupidity.
Why else would Ben
Roethlisberger be so stupid?
Simple,
he’s and
athlete
with too
much
money
and too
little
brain.
Based
on the
accident
report,
Ben may
have even
less gray
matter than before.
I saw his interview where
he defended his right to ride
without a helmet. Since no
law required him to wear
one, then he had a right to
risk his football career.
I’m all for that. It’s why
teams have backup quarter
backs.
I hope Roethlisberger
